  1. as i am sure you all already know their is a patched firmware which upgrades the 2500A to the Dual Chanel 2510A.
The question is: how dangerous is it? how dangerous is firmware upgrade generally? any tips what to to do or not to do?

  2. I think it should be safe, just wait untill dual layer media comes out before trying it. You can always revert back in most cases.

I didn't know there was a dual layer firmware upgrade for the 2500A

I've done my 2500A firmware upgrade with the latest one from rpc.org or whatever it's called and it was a piece of piss - all done from within windows in a matter of seconds. I'd imagine you revert back to previous upgrades by re applying the appropriate firmware upgrade ?

Anyone got a link to the Dual Layer firmware upgrade ? And where do you get Dual Layer discs from ?

  5. link:
    http://tdb.rpc1.org/#ND2510A
you can't get DL media, they're not in the market yet.
and you can't just install the previous firmware because it requires original firmware, which you don't have in case you installed the patched firmware.
you have to install it thru DOS. then comes the question? how to do it thru DOS? where to get the original fiemware for DOS flashing?

This is from the link you gave me -

Currently supplied as binaries suitable for flashing in DOS. The package includes original firmware, RPC1 with Rip Lock, and Rip Lock only. The patched firmware also include the 2100@2500 patch so could used on an 2100A or 2500A drive. K0P2 Binaries and Flasher.
Seems the package includes the original firmware too. To do it through DOS you'll have to create a bootable floppy disc most likely.

but i am afraid to screw thing so meanwhile, until there will be DL medias available i will stay with the 1.06 firmware.

    I'm sorry for the meddling!
Does anybody know if it is possible to apply the discussing patch for NEC-1300A?
Could it be done in principle?

  10. Before you damage your drive I would read NEC's warning on doing this upgrade. The drive needs more than a FW change to make it write to DL.
