  1. I am converting DV to DVD. I'm still new to the process so I'm using a number of different methods. One thing I've had happen a couple times is static with loud sounds but none at normal or low volumes.

The sound was captured at 16 bit and coverted at 256 kbps and 48 kHz.

What can I try to get rid of the static?

You might want to try to normalize the DV audio by splitting the PCM WAV audio file from the video and using a WAV editor such as SOUND FORGE or GOLDWAVE or COOLEDIT etc.

I normalize to 0.0db using SOUND FORGE then convert that WAV audio file to 256kbps 2.0 AC-3 audio.

    FulciLives,

How do you covert the WAV to AC3? What program or plug in do you suggest? I'm have Goldwave and SoundForge.

    Thanks,

If the audio clipped coming in , you are doomed. No way to fix it.

Either the signal is too big , or the software line in level was too high.
Screwed either way - information has been lost

Well probably the cheapest way to do it would be to use the AC-3 plug-in for TMPGEnc DVD Author.

There are better ways BUT then you are talking about a lot of money spent and it's just not worth it.

Thanks Fulci, how compatible is the AC3 plugin for TMPGENC? In other words, how compatible is the AC3 audio file in other DVD players? Is it the same as converting it to AC3 with those expensive converters?

I've actually never used it but from what I hear it creates a very compatable AC-3 audio file ... I just think you don't get the overall "controll" like you do with the more expensive AC-3 encoders but I'm not sure how extensive it (TMPGEnc) is with that.

For instance the one I use will let me set STEREO or DOLBY SURROUND for 2.0 AC-3 (or I can leave it unmarked which I think defaults to STEREO). I can set the dialog normalization and set up DRC if I want and of course I can select any of the AC-3 acceptable bitrates from 192kbps to 448kbps though for 2.0 AC-3 I've found 256kbps to be more than high enough.
