Has anyone heard anymore about the DL firmware upgrade possibility for the 106/A06? I was just curious to see if anyone knew anything more about it. I know the standard for DL is still to come I am just curious and impatient.

DL firmware = firmware that allows a burner which couldn't previous burn DVD+R DL to do so. I am assuming, anyway.

I doubt you're going to be able to get firmware to do this. I plan on getting a second drive for this purpose once the dust settles and I know which burners can do this. I expect LG will bring one out that can do DVD+R DL and DVD-RAM, since they have a raging hard-on to advertise that their machines can burn anything. However, I would wait for the early adopters to sort out the mess first, because any new technology is going to have hiccups at first.

Well, Pioneer used a 106/a06 to do a DL demonstration burn and they said all they did was install modified firmware to do it.

That's no guarantee that they will release the same hardware with a firmware revision and label it DL. I would also be surprised if they (or any company) releases a simply firmware update to enable DL when they can get people to buy more kit by withholding it.

The best you can probably hope for is that once the DL's start shipping in quantity, someone hacks a DL firmware for retro-fitting into your burner.

Didn't Pioneer admit, after the demonstration, that they had used a jacked-up writer and not just a firmware-updated one?

EDIT: I love Indolikaa's grammar lapses, don't you?

Indo, actually the point of the demonstration from what I have read was that they did it with nothing mroe than firmware no hardware changes at all.

I'm doing a forum search right now. You should, too.

Actually, there was a thread that was started shortly after that demonstration that talked about this inconsistency. However, my poor forum search abilities are widely known, so it may take me some time to find the thread in question...

  10. I think that there were some unmentioned hardware changes too. The newer model drives that are advertised as DL upgradable have the proper hardware in place. The Pioneer 106 does not and even if it did do you honestly think they would just give it away when they are sure to have a newer, faster better drive they would much rather sell you.

How, exactly, does one find out if their drive can be upgraded to burn +R DL?

Alright I got tired of speculation so I contacted Pioneer and the official word is NO they will not be doing it. And yes I would expect they would give it away free it is a great enticement to get people to go and buy a faster DL drive.

The first DL burners haven't even been released in the country I am stuck in at the moment, so I'm not even going to try and speculate. I am going to wait about six or seven months after release for the dust to clear. If LG's DL burners are as universal and easily flashed as the GSA-4040B, I will be going with LG.
