  1. I have read several articles and references to a free applescript program from aplle called "play list to DVD", yet I cannot find it on the apple site. All links lead no where.
Has any one seen or used this program as it sounds pretty funky and just what I want.
I can do it manually, but what the hey!! If its automated that would be so cool!!

    This is from MacMegasite:

"Apple has released a very cool new application called Playlist to DVD for iLife 04.

Another way to enjoy and share your music--turn your favorite iTunes playlist into a DVD for playback in home entertainment systems! The created DVD has on-screen navigation menus showing a list of upcoming songs and the current track's album art and artist info.
The Playlist to DVD application creates a QuickTime movie containing the audio tracks and album art from a chosen iTunes playlist. The newly created movie, and an album art slideshow, are automatically added to the currently open iDVD project. And since the added 640x480 movie is created with chapter markers, it's easy to sequentially navigate its tracks using standard DVD controls.

An iDVD project can hold an exported playlist that contains a maximum of 99 tracks with a maximum total combined length of up to 90 minutes.

Playlist to DVD was developed with AppleScript Studio and is available as a free download here. "

It should already be there in iDVD 4.0.1.

  3. Thanks for the reply but, If so, Where?
I cant find any scripts in any menus of iDVD 4.01

It seems to be a program released after iLife as a free extra.

I believe that it was released before iLife (some dates show January) and then removed before iLife (presumably in order to be synchronized in release times) and then never put back. Too bad, cause it looked cool.
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

I have it (but haven't tried it out) and can send it to you if you want. Or perhaps the moderator will let me post it to the site ( i don't have a web page).

  8. here is one list, but is seems to be missing the one you mentioned:
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/idvd/

the one you want has a dead link:
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/playlisttodvd/
but is still linked to by apple at
    http://www.apple.com/applescript/news/

This is the closest apple has posted now:

  9. Thank you, cbkilner but I had already found all those links.
It seems Apple pulled it a little while ago. I did read somewhere that this may of been due to a problem with copyright ownership on iTunes artwork (although the music itself would of been under the same scope)

On the Aussie Apple site, new features for iDVD include:

    "Playlists to DVD
Enjoy and share your music thanks to the Playlist To DVD AppleScript — turn your favorite iTunes playlist into a DVD for playback in home entertainment systems.http://www.apple.com/applescript/playlisttodvd/"
Which of course is not there!!

No other scripts or apps do such as fancy job as this ones description!!
The current iDVD script is just a looped slide show and does not create chapters to the length of the songs.

Just hoping that some one still has it to host or email.

    Heres hoping.....

I'm going to use this opportunity to announce my new website that will go live when I feel like it. Download the Playlist to DVD thing at www.deadsierra.com. Yes, I do rock.

Edit: And everyone thank willrob for giving this file to me in the first place.

Edit2: I should buy www.leeloodallasmultipass.com. That would be cool. Don't any of you be getting ideas now.

  12. Does anyone have the source code? I usually download everything I see that's interesting, but for some reason didn't grab this. There are some cool changes that could be made to this, but I think it'd require the project files.

  13. It's an Applescript. Shouldn't it be editable in Script Editor?

  14. I have now used this program a few times and have had mixed results. It seems a bit clunky in its execution and has problems with artwork of different dimensions covering up the play list.
I have seen some music DVD's done with the version of toast that comes with Jam 6.....and the results were VERY IMPRESSIVE!!!!! Just drop the tracks in from iTunes and its all done fore you!!
I will lash out and get this program....Even more impressive is that the toast background is a photoshop document in a folder called "themes" in the package contents.
And even more impressive again is that you have a choice of PCM or dolby digital!! The web site claimes up to 36hours on one DVD!!!!

Way cool for those of us who use there DVD as their music system.

It was written with Applescript Studio which actually compiles some of the information to Cocoa code. When I examine the script, there are two big hunks of applescript still in there, but I think what I want to edit is elsewhere.

  16. Just since I will never get a bunch of people talking about this stuff in one place (I know it's a video place, but you guys may be able to help just this one time (wink) I rip all my music on itunes on my editing machine... (not hooked up to internet ever). Is there a way to get the album art online? and if so... where do I put it to make it work w/ itunes correctly (so I can do the DVD from Itunes thing?) Thanks and if you're mad at me for posting this question, you can yell if it helps J/k. Thanks to all- Peace

By the way, Apple's new iTunes 4.5 and Quicktime 6.5.1 make it impossible to play or burn any songs downloaded from the iTunes Music Store with any application other than Apple's. So Toast 6, Jam 6 etc. only work with music from sources other than the iTunes Music Store.

True ... Just tried to make a CD single via Toast 6 of an Al Green track I bought a couple of weeks ago at iTMS. It made a disc image of 3 minutes and 51 seconds of silence.

  19. is that due to it's format? Is it MP3 or AIFF or AC3?

  21. my ignorance-: is that a bad thing? I use itunes now for burning audio cd's... but can that make it really hard for us in the future, by forcing our music collection to only be used w/ itunes?

It won't make any difference to you or me. But burning CDs with Toast is faster than using iTunes. And a few users don't have a CD burner that works with iTunes burning. There also are some nice third-party applications that now can't use an iTunes Music Store song.

The ITMS songs do work with iPhoto slide shows and play with QuickTime. You can't export anything from QuickTime Pro that contains an ITMS song other than saving it as a QuickTime Movie. I don't know how well the ITMS songs work with iMove or iDVD. I suspect there would be no sound if I tried burning an ITMS song with iDVD. My guess is iTunes is the only option for burning ITMS songs.

Has anyone gone to the iDVD demonstration in an Apple store lately? What are the trainers saying about this new incompatibility between Apple products (iTMS songs and iDVD)? Those guys always have a slick answer for everything...

  24. I'm about to start working there, so soon, I'll be able to give you some slick answers (and quick replies too!)

  25. I've read that even Quicktime is crippled by the new update (to iTunes and Quicktime itself). Appantley if one uses an iTMS track as a soundtrack in iMovie and then save it as a Quicktime movie to share with others, it will only play the sound if the computer its playing on is authorized. See MacIntouch for the discussion.

I haven't tried this yet, since I'venver purchased a song from iTMS, but if true it flies in the face of Apple's advertized ease of linking iApp applications.

Also in order to share a library, all computers involved need to up grade to 4.5. So Apple givith and Apple taketh away.

In my opinion its just Apple trying to address what was likely a demand from the major labels to take the freedom to copy encrypted song files down a notch*. They took the risk that it would disable a key functionality in their other iApps. I'm sure a fix will be made soon to bring it back.

Just in case it doesn't, one could always burn a CD-RW of a playlist, then drag the AIFF files off that disc back to the Desktop and use the files in other iApps. I was talking through this issue with a colleague yesterday and I was astounded that he had never considered it as an option. It just never occurred to him .. so I thought I'd share.

    * Playlists of protected files have been reduced from 10 burns to 7 without changing song order. The plus of this change is you may now have 2 more computers (5 now up from 3) authorized to play music.
