    ..To answer this question.

Does anyone still play Dungeons&Dragons on the board format? It seems everyone would have switched to pc/video games. You guyz in the engineering dorms, help a brother out.

  2. AD&D every Sat night around here. A regular 8 of us, 2x24's of brew and we're hacked and slayed out by 3 am. Get bored, roll up a new char, and play "caps" with the D20

On the rare occasions I travel back to Albuquerque, me and some old friends from middle school like to get together and hash a night of the 'Basic Rules' game. I'm talking the original 'Red' boxed game from the early 1980's. Vintage rules, simple gameplay, nothing too fancy.

And if we're really feeling nostalgic, we add a Star Frontiers or Axis and Allies chapter to the evening.

Really?Thats quite interesting. I never really got into it. Seemed like a lot of work. What is the appeal when you have so many cool rpgs out there. Is it a social thing(something to do when you get togehter drinking).

btw- Not being sarcastic if it sounds like it.

Purely a walk down memory lane, Dr. Gee. A good night of relaxing with seven friends and talking about the good old days.

  8. I think it's more than just a social thing. We could get together and talk about computers all night just as easily, but when most of us work in the industry, talking about fantastical characters and monsters, and getting into the nitty-gritty of the game is a distractive relaxation. Nothing at all to do with anything remotely resembling real life.
It becomes an obsession for some, similar to videohelp.com :P
The next logical progression seems to be Dungeon Siege, or Diablo II, on the comp. Of course then follows LAN games, etc

LAN parties. That's on my to-try list this year.

  10. I have a nephew that is into D&D. It seems to be going stronger than ever
but never was my hip flask of vodka. I played Car Wars. Instead
of girlie character hit points, we had Armour and modern weapons and gory degrees of character injury.

In one meet, where prize money was involved, I turned up with
the equivalent of a Volkswagon. My ranking allowed me to
purchase all sorts of nasty weapons and enough armour to protect the planet.

I had no armour, no seeable weapons, ordinary stock standard chassis. motor, standard human driver etc. After a few circuits they
all decided to gang up on the idiot without any defense - me. Unknown to them I had a doomsday weapon installed.

The game was over in under
10 minutes and, because I'd used a radioactive device, I fragged all
their best cars and I was able to dominate the following rounds.

They changed the rules after that one.

  12. back in my teen years i used to play D&D (AD&D) to be more specific just about every weekend for about 2 years.. there was usually 5 or 6 of us.. eventually everyone either died & moved.. one of the fucks took all my dice, characters & books.. i think he's moved back here, so i'm thinking about paying him a visit.. an ass kicking and wallet theft seems would seem to be fair.

Oi, 1st edition was anything but simple. I think 3rd really streamlined the gameplay with the d20 system, but then what do I do with all these dice?

Yeah, I'm a pencil/paper gamer still. I DM a group of 4 in the summer and sometimes in the winter when the weather isn't so nice (summers here are far too humid to be considered nice). Started playing on 1st edition with "CityState of the Invinceable Overlord" campaign setting. Moved on to 2nd edition in college where AD&D in the dorms was disturbingly popular. Jumped on the d20 system when the books came out to do away with a lot of the crazy numbers associated with previous editions. I now run a campaign through the "Scarred Lands" books which are excellent.

I do like D&D over MMORPGs since it is a social thing. I'd say our group spends maybe 50% of our attention on the game, and BS away the rest of the night. I remember one player getting so loaded on SoCo he fell out of his seat laughing when he got one-shotted by falcon with razor-sharp wings or something (I play the triple-20 roll rule). It took him (and us) a full twenty minuted to recover from the hilarity and resume normal breathing. Good times

Try the new Axis&Allies revision? Far more balanced and entertaining than the original, and a lot more involved than the Pacific/Europe versions.
