  1. Sometimes - and I think this is media dependent - when I burn using Nero, it says it is burning at 4x, but the time it takes to burn is 30 minutes or so, which makes me think it is really 2x

The media is 4x rated and I set the burn speed to 4x. Why does it take longer?

you could be running a bunch of programs in the background which would slow down the burning process.

    Great news!!! I'm not alone.

Well, I can understand your frustration, but it appears Nero is to blame.

I am using Nero (6.0.3) and a SONY DRU500A. I've been able to burn TDK disks at 4X using a pervious version of Nero.

What version are you using? Try the latest update. I will too.
The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know.

  4. The sony is very tricky to get to 4x. You'd have to use only media for the Sony, not just any 4x media. Meritline.com lists what can do 4x with what firmware. Probably Accu media.

Recently, I have been having a similar problem although it might have a different cause. When I burn Optodisc 4x discs with Nero 6.3.1.10 using my Optorite DD0201 burner (similar design to Sony as I understand), the red light (burning light) blinks some of the time and the buffer level is high some of the time and then the green light (reading light) blinks and no data is written. So my burner only writes less than half of the time, the rest of the time "reads" data. This is the same situation with Ritek DVD-RW I burn. Obviously, this slows down my 4x burning levels to about 40 minutes. Anybody can help?

  7. My PC: P4 3G & RAM 1G.

Burner: Pioneer DVR-106D with firmware v1.08 install.

Burn DVD movies with Nero Burning ROM v6.3.10; Roxio Easy CD and DVD Creator v6 or CopyToDVD v3.0.6.15.

    All need 40 min!

With elby CloneDVD v2.0.84, from rip to finish burning, usual take 50 min: the burn usual is around 35min.

I think most the time that only can burn around 2.3x.

  8. Here is a registry trick to show realtime burning speed and buffer state if you burn with Nero.

Sure enough, when I updated my firmware, DMA was disabled. Hope enabling fixes it. May your second post be as useful as your first. Thanks!

After enabling DMA (the hard way), my DVD-Rs burn at 4x. In addition, DVD-RWs no longer fail less than 50% in. Thanks again knotnow!
