Just got a call from Eson Service centre where my Photo830 printer is being looked at.
The capping meachnism that seals off the heads is faulty.
Repair cost - parts only - $360 Aussie.
I can replace the damn thing with a brand newy for $250.
What a crock!
Only 15 months old too.

This brings up the point of tv repair shops. How do these mom and pop places stay in business when the cost of repairs is close to or as much as a replacement?

Scott,
And your point is?
Why would you repair a 15 month old printer?
The latest models, though more cheaply constructed, lighter, flimsier, etc., will outdo most of the older ones, print quality wise. And way faster. One of my daughters has an Epson 800 something, and the mither takes for damned ever to print a CD insert.
My Canon 750 prints an 8 X 10 photo in less than 2 minutes, best quality.
Best get a new one. This one will probably break something else in short order after they do "service" on it.
Cheers,
George
DG, Would you get a 75 buck VHS machine repaired? Or a DVD player? I toss mine, go get a new one. Mom and Pop can't really fix 'em anyhow, just patch. -

about everywhere you look. I ran a small repair business
as a sideline some years ago and even when including computers
the effort was not worth the income.
I sympathize with you scottb721. You are experiencing what we in the
trade call the "go away price". You would not get a "repair" regardless
as it costs too much per hour for the tech. What they do if someone
is stupid enough to want a consumer model fixed is they just put your
printers shell over another set of guts (excepting items like the
roller etc)
Unlike gmatov, I don't feel comfortable with this throw away attutude. It's practices like these that will stuff up the planet for good. -

Offline,
You look in my garage, you will see that I am not a throwaway person.
But, do you buy a warranty, 20 to 30 bucks, on a 50 buck player? When my Apex 1201 died, Apex said send it to California repair center, flat fee of 39 bucks to repair, probably 15 to 20 to ship to the left coast. Paid 59 bucks for it.
Would you send it in for repairs or throw it away? (Actually, haven't thrown it away, yet, still in the basement with 15 years or so of computer parts. Throwaway? Wish I were.)

Gee,
That I can understand. But I've been offered 10 buck warranty on a 20 buck toaster. (Bread, that is, not a CD-DVD toaster.)
Twice, extended warranties have come into play for me, on machines I had here for repair. One girl bought 3 year, and the warranty outfit had her information on record even though she couldn't find it. Sent me a new Mobo and HDD, the other had her machine die 3 days after expiration, called, raised hell, they sent her a trade in or something, no warranty. It died in about 6 months.
She brought it to me for repair. New PS, good as new. Gave me the other machine, new PS, good as new. Happy as a lark. Has a machine to give her mother, and her own, too, for 80 bucks, total, including new CPU cooler. Original, I think was an e-machine bought on TV, replacement was an HP.
I have no idea what the warranty cost her, but here, it was worth it.
Cheers,
George
