Is there any reason to use military surplus ammo over commercial, aside from price?

Jesus Christ, it frightens me that some of you have access to firearms. Don't pop a cap in my ass, please!

  3. It's okay, kinda over priced if you ask me. I like my Mini-14 better and it cost half as much

Nope, it's been a while since I bought ammo, but walmart had cheap remington .223 ammo (in a pale yellow box) cheaper than military surplus and it shot great.

I have an Armalite, A2-style with the 20in barrel. Nice to shoot, and accessories and ammunition are cheap.

Good commercial ammunition will often be of higher quality than military surplus - sometimes it was surplused because it got left out in the rain at the landing strip. That said, good commercial ammunition may be very expensive. It depends on how you want to use it, though. Different needs = different types of bullet.

It's usually best to avoid ammunition from the eastern bloc nations (both commercial and surplus). A lot of those have steel cases or laquer coatings and neither of those is healthy for an AR15. In particular, Wolf brand Russian ammunition is known to cause problems.

It'll work fine in a Mini-30. It'll work fine in AK-style guns. It'll work fine in lots of guns. But a lot of it doesn't suit the AR15 design. The reason Wolf brand in particular is so well known is that their shells are lacquered. When you fire the gun gets hot. Then when a new round is chambered the lacquer melts - and with the AR15 it ends up in the action mixed with the gunpowder residues.

I have plenty of ammunition that works well. Clean burning, brass cased, and conveniently packaged in 30-round boxes. I prefer to skip the stuff that would make me spend extra time cleaning.

  10. Not to shabby, I've had my Bushmaster for a while they are well built and has never given me a problem.... But man they have gone up in price

As for ammo, I like the 62gr IMI best..... Low flash, and very clean.

40 years ago, we said "This is my rifle....", not weapon.

'Course, you might be using Army talk. Hell, they didn't even know what a rifle was for.

I never held nor fired one of those toys. M1's, M14's, yes, plastic and aluminum toys, no. If they ever were any good, they would not be reverting to the latest version of the M14 as the new combat arm. And, it will never be as good as the M1 was.

Sprayfire seems to have gone out of style. If you can't hit your target, mebbe you should be a cook or clean the latrines.

Remember, gun control is keeping them all in the black.

    Pacman,

    OK.

(As an aside, wonder why all the PMs are deleted from my sentbox?)

    Ah, well, Cheers,

Ah, the M1 and M14/21/24/25 were both great firearms. Heavy, but very powerful and very accurate. I'm not an assault-rifle fanatic. They're cool and all, and I've had the opportunity to fire quite a lot of different weapons from around the world, but my favorite firearms are longrifles. My one good gun is an H&K G90, basically a civvy mod of the military MSG90 (similar block to the PSG-1 sniper rifle). I'll have to get it out and take pics sometime. I used to hunt deer with it once upon a time but stopped hunting with firearms. I now only hunt deer with a bow. It became pretty unsporting when I could kill any deer I could see within my scope, even at some pretty fantastic distances. Oddly I don't really enjoy the "sport" of killing deer, but boy if the venison isn't tasty

If I ever wanted to get a really nice rifle it would either be the infamous Accuracy International .338 or the P-H M85. Oh, and McMillan stocks rule.

  20. I agree, WOLF ammo is pretty bad for the AR..... It's casings can damage the ejector. Check out www.cheaperthandirt.com , they usually have decent prices on ammo. Not sure if botach tactical still sells the IMI ammo, but I think it's great.

I would have tried to get it in 7.62x39, but that's just a matter of personal preference. There's lots of surplus for both and many good pistol reloading presses will handle .223.

Heh, I forgot to mention I reload my own cartridges. That's the only way you can know for sure you're getting quality rounds. But then for you assault rifle guys it's quantity over quality :P

I've got a handgun that's never seen a factory round. I only keep factory ammo as "jury ammo" in case it's needed for defense

Make sure that your ammo uses non-corrosive primers. Either that, or CLEAN THE SHIT out of your barrel after ever time you have a shooting session.

its non-corrosive primers - but nothing wrong with corrosive (which last longer) , i just use some old hoppes #9 stashed away or just soap and water ..

i get them in those sealed 700 quanity tins, russian HP's , that ussually is good for a week or two
(or untill the batteries die in the aimpoint (wish i could find the old style real mercury batteries as lithiums replacements seem work like crap when its real real cold)) . always had a problem with that for those of you thinking of dot style scopes and live where its cold.

never liked the chinese surplus 7.62x39's -- lot of dudes (norelco)

I agree. When I was in the Marine Corps it was common for our M-16's to jam, but my Mini-14 (based on the M-14) never jams
