  1. I captured a concert from a VHS video, it was a good
capture, in sync and clear. When i used TMPG to author
it it started to lose sync after 40 mins, the second last
song of the capture infact. I also added other clips and
there in sync, would recapturing it make any difference?
as i said the original capture was all in sync.

  2. Try burning the DVD and see if it's still out of sync on your DVD player. I'm willing to bet it will not be.

It doesn't surprise me. Reviewing the MPEG can give good sync, but authoring causes the sync problem to show up. I don't know exactly why ...maybe the PTS values are handled differently?

I had the same problem during my VHS archiving project until I bought a TBC. Until then, what did work was to author and open the VOBs with PowerDVD and review right before burning. Then at least if it was out of sync I didn't waste a blank, and I could try recapping with the tracking adjusted differently. Sometimes that did help make a difference between a usable tape and one that had to wait until the TBC. After the TBC sync problems were just a memory

It sounds like you're already reviewing the authored form.

I'll bet it's still out of sync after the burn. Capping from tape is challenging.
