  1. I have an app that measures the temp on my harddrive...and if it goes over 50 it gives me an alert!! Is over 50 degrees too high...??

  2. 50 sounds good to me. I can't even touch mine when they're running. My PC says system temp is around 40 degrees and CPU is at 46 or so under no load at all. It will push 49 system and well over 60 CPU when encoding. The fact that there's 3 hard drives in the doesn't help anything...

Depends on the HD's also. I bought a couple of cheap Maxtor 30G ($25US after rebates) for a friends RAID0 system. Those suckers would burn your fingers if you touched them. Glad they're not in my system. I wonder if they will last out the warranty. My server case has 3 Maxtor 80G's, but the intake fan is in front of them and blows over them. Really nice idea. Checked the surface temps with an infared temp gun and is about 30C.

  4. I have two 80mm intake fans blowing over both my hard drives, and they never get that warm - just warm to the touch. I wonder why it is that some hard drives get red hot.

I know it's friction. I'm wondering why it is that SOME drives seem to get very hot and others do not, even though the design is very similar.

I think in the case of the Maxtor's I mentioned, it's just a result of cheap construction, poor materials and design. Any HD that runs very hot is not quality and seems would have a limited lifespan. I don't think external cooling is going to help much in this case either.

  8. I have a 200gb maxtor diamond in a vantex vortex 5.25 enclosure (quality if you want one), i use the drive for all my p2p so it is accessed a LOT. You can have fan 1, fan 2 or no fan. No fan, it runs around 45, fan 1 39 and fan2 33.
    If it's wet, drink it
