  1. You guys have been my number one source for creating a very good DVD the last time around.

This time I am at a loss on what to store 9hrs worth of drag racing digital video on. We had three 3ccd cameras shooting from different angles and most of it will go in the trash. 1 Cannon and 2 new Sonys were used. I need to transfer the AVI to disks so they can be edited by 3 other people. I only have a 120 gig HD and this will never hold it all I presume.

I am willing to add another firewire external drive just for this if I have too, any of your reccomendations would be appreciated.

We are shooting for only one full DVD out of this at the highest quality rate, and if need be a dual disk could be an option. The last one I made was 46 mins running time and was 2.6 gigs, with little to no effects in it.

Nine hours of DV AVI should amount to around 107gb. An external 120gb drive ought to do it, no? As for your second problem, it all depends on how long your finished product is.

If you use the same quality as is seen in most commercial DVD-Videos, I'd expect you could probably fit about ninety minutes into a single 4.35GB DVD. But of course, it all really depends on numerous other factors.

You could also be more choosy in what you transfer to the hard drive at the beginning, rather than dumping the whole 9 hours. Most editors (Vegas, Premiere etc) let you view through the tapes, setting in and out points for the scenes you want to transfer. You can quickly cut out the stuff you know you definately wont use. This will take up a lot less space, and also make your editing quicker down the track as this first pass will have been done.

  5. Cool guys I appreciate the help, I think I will go with removing the useless content while transfering it. By the time it's taken down to size it should be less than 2hrs.
