  1. As seen on ZDNet:

Sony and Toppan Printing are making a new mark on Blu-ray disc technology.

The two companies have been working for about a year on printing data onto Blu-ray discs made mostly of paper. The companies are aiming to produce lower-cost discs and expand the use of the technology.

Sony and Toppan announced the 25GB discs Thursday and said more details will be revealed at the Optical Data Storage conference this weekend in Monterey, Calif. The discs will be able to store more than two hours of high-definition video. Representatives from both companies were not available to comment on their plans.

    What the hell ?!?!?

This is a quote from the link provided:

Toppan said the paper discs add a level of security in some cases. "Since a paper disc can be cut by scissors easily, it is simple to preserve data security when disposing of the disc," Hideaki Kawai, managing director of Toppan, said in a statement.
    This is for real?

Reminds me of those "cardboard" type records I use to cut off the back of cereal boxes as a kid.

    Sounds insane !!!

When I first read this I thought that it must still be like a disk just use some of the same materials that go into paper. But then...

Toppan said the paper discs add a level of security in some cases. "Since a paper disc can be cut by scissors easily, it is simple to preserve data security when disposing of the disc," Hideaki Kawai, managing director of Toppan, said in a statement.
Forget about security, how about usability? How can you trust an archival format that you can probably rip in two with your own hands?

Well by archival I just mean storing the data for longer than it takes to transfer files from one pc to another, ala a floppy disk. (which breaks almost as easily as paper.)

I mean what are you going to do with 25gigs? The article talks about how it is well suited for HD material. It seems conceivable that one of these disks (without knowing more about them) could easily be ripped and destroyed before you even get a chance for one viewing.

Hmm, maybe they could use a caddy.

Paper-based recording materials. I wonder if we'll be able to overburn them.

Maybe it is made with the same kind of "paper" that the Post Office uses for Priority Mail envelopes. It's strong and you can't easily tear it ... at least not as easy as "paper" like the normal kind you would write on.

But this material isn't all THAT strong. It can be easily cut and/or shredded.

I forget what that material is called ... anyone know what I'm talking about? I wanna say it starts with a letter T ...

But still ... paper ... no thank you! ... even IN a caddy!

I believe you're referring to Tyvek, which was originally designed as a moisture resistant wrap for houses under siding.

If you try to tear it against it's "grain", you won't have much success, it's very stout.

  15. This is so some of those films will have a further life after viewing, as *delicate* toilet tissue.. tho some films should be used as this before viewing.

But if it could easily be ripped then just view the ripped disc...
We move on from DVD-rip to Blue-Ray-Paper-rip.

I hope this is not true either.

besides, I have other plans for blu-disks that need a little destruction.

  22. thats one of the most stupid ideas I've heard yet. I wonder how stable it would spin? would it degrade if it gets wet? Would it catch fire under the laser? would it be prone to termites? etc. etc..... by the time you actually put enough treatments on it to take care of such possible problems it would cost more than other discs. why would anyone even consider an idea so stupid. I guess they kidnapped A.W.E.S.O.M. - O 4000 and reprogrammed him to come up with these ideas.

yea that's its stupid alright. I have enough trouble keeping regular disks unscratched enough to play right in a player.. I doubt these disks would be an improvement.

Screw that business. I'm not buying any paper discs. If they cost 5 cents or less, then maybe. Otherwise Sony could just go home and get their F***ing shine boxes.
