    New Scientist link: http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99994894

    has this tidbit
Data is stored on Blu-Ray disks in the form of tiny ridges on the surface of an opaque 1.1-millimetre-thick substrate. This lies beneath a transparent 0.1mm protective layer.

The substrate is normally made from a polycarbonate plastic, which is ultimately derived from crude oil. But Sony and Toppan Printing have replaced this with a mixture of paper and another polymer.
Doesn't sound quite as "flimsy" when you look at it that way. :P

  3. i dont know why you're all freaking out about the paper. its not like they are tissue paper or something, its 51% paper composite, and will definitely be strong.

Think about it, a lot of you probably use speakers that have paper cones, and they withstand a lot of vibration.

my speakers have protective grills because the thing is so fragile, one little touch and the speaker dies.

This just doesn't seem like a great idea. With the limited info we have, I would say no to this. (I am open to change my vote upon new info.)

Not recordable? Well, if true, I guess netflix will like this media.

What we need is non-optic, high speed, high capacity, durable, cheap media device. say... 1000 GB, Seral-ata speeds or better, and able to withstand an average car rolling over it on pave road. we also need the pricetag to be around $1 a device (at least wholesale/before markup)

that would be better then this paper stuff. besides, star trek didn't have paper storage devices, it had high capacity, hard storage devices. remember?

  8. no you are mistaken, the entire starship is actually made out of 51% recycled paper, so starfleet can write off the cost on their taxes

Come on guys. This was actual fotage taken from star ship enterprise, while it was on its mission. Think about, if the enterprise was out of paper, how could it cruse in space? I mean we all have seen the videos taken directly from the ships video recording system, right? remember those high capacity devices Kirk had in his cabin?

See my point, we need to bring space technologies to earth again. Makes you wonder how space became more advance then earth. I bet the vulcans gave us some of this stuff, yes?

One thing is for sure, Kirk didn't have any paper disk thingee that he would stick in his computer.

Paper disks are not a great idea, imo... but I withold final jugdment until more info is recieved.

I want a cherry 2000 model if you wanna talk about futuristic space age technology.

Give me a cherry 2000 and I could give a rat's ass about Super Duper HDTV or much of anything else since I'll be too busy ...

It can't be, the tech manual says "high tech crystal electronics" The paper look must be throw us off.

If the thing was made of paper, it wouldn't drive through space, nor would the ship be able to get termite control guys to warranty the thing, yes?

Boy, do I remember these. (We're showing our age, y'know). I had the Archies one (Sugar, Sugar/ Bang Shang-a-Lang/ Everything's Archie/ etc.), a Monkees one and a couple of Bobby Sherman (Easy Come, Easy Go/ Little Woman/ Seattle/ La La La/ etc.)

Musta played those to death on that battery powered phono I had, tinny sound and all. Great times. Didn't have the money to buy the 45's so I was happy to choke down some Super Sugar Crisp to get them.

Somehow, I don't see our kids having the same memories like this. Too bad. These are collectors items now, too bad we didn't keep some around. Worth $$$ - who knew?

    LOL

    Yes just like that !

Although I seem to recall that they were small so I would think 45rpm instead but oh well.

Can't do that with optical media!

Well actually maybe they will be sometime soon hehehe

    Foo,

Yeah, too bad those fold-ins aren't as collectible as the records (but now I know where you got your sense of humor)

"Mad" & "Cracked" - God, I read those until my brain turned to Jello. What, me worry? Then on top of that, "CARtoons" and "HotRodCARtoons" (remember those? there was a rich kid named Vernon Wimple that hated VW's and would buy them just for the pleasure of smashing them with a hammer).

I attribute my very warped sense of the world to those magazines. :P

And knowing today's parents, little Johnnie (not you, he he) would get what he wants. I'm trying to remember, but you are probably right. These were EP's, with 4 or 5 songs on them so they probably played at 33rpm, not 45 (although what I meant was that I didn't have money to buy 45 rpm singles in those days - 49c was a lot of money back then).

Now, if they can put optical media on the back of cereal boxes, God knows what they'll do with that technology. Boxes of cake mix with a paper DVD instruction manual for those culinary challenged wives out there. Anything is possible. Somehow that lacks the charm of getting out a pair of scissors and trying to cut a circle so the record will play. I remember the needle on my player was so heavy the record would slip on the platter and I'd have to use scotch tape to keep it against the platter. And what fidelity! not to mention wow & flutter. Who knows, maybe one of these days I'll get a chance to go thru my mom's boxes of junk when I visit her and find one of these has survived.

They weren't quite as much fun as Mad but when you're 10 years old, you'll read almost anything that looks like a comic!

Hell, those should have been banned for screwing up our views of everything so early in life!

I'm kinda bummed out that nobody seemed to "get" my cherry 2000 referrence.

So here is a LINK to the movie on AMAZON.COM ... read the review and it should give you an idea of what I was hinting at

As for the magazines I always like MAD magazine ... CRACK'ED always felt like it was a rip-off except I would sometimes buy it because they did have a tendacy to do goofs on monsters like dracula and frankenstein etc. so being a horror movie fan I bought those issues sometimes.

But yeah MAD was pretty darn good and as far as I know it is still around though I haven't bought one in ages.

hey we got to get back on topic or that Baldwin guy will come around, and lock this topic up.

so... how about this... lets list the top 5 things we can do with our brand new "blu-ray" paper disks!

    5. toliet tissue
    4. termite bait
    3. DHL/UPS shipping labels
    2. Back up poor quality skin flicks

and the number on thing to do with my brand new paper blu-disks... "stick it in the microwave" for 6 seconds.

I barely found this thread and I totally got it. That movie is the stuff a fanboy's wet dreams are made of. Why that dude chose Melanie Griffith I'll never know.

As for this "paper disc" idea, I think the whole thing stinks of Sony having a hard-on for the rain forests.
