Is there a new version of this tool coming out anytime soon?

I recently did a backup of Vanilla Sky, and I found the output fine up until towards the end, when there are several noticeable MPEG artefacts in the final sequence. Unlike the intermittent pauses I get on the two Toshiba players I have been using, they can be seen every time this part of the video is replayed. It seems that the artefacting introduced by this utility goes beyond the extra digital grain that is somewhat inherent in further compression. So I really hope the next version is an improvement.

Is it worth redoing these backups using the 3.0.5 beta?

  2. From what I understand:

Development has ceased on DVD Shrink. DVD Shrink's feature set can now be found commercially in the form of Nero Recode, which is part of Nero Express 2 or Nero 6 Ultra Edition if you installed it that way.

Many users report higher quality results using this software as opposed to DVD Shrink. You also need to purchase the DVD-Video plug-in to get it to work just like Shrink, if I'm not mistaken.

Just out of curiocity, did you label the DVD? It seems that has been a symptom of DVD labeling. It has happened to me, as soon as I peel the label off the problem is gone.

    Just great.

Can't we paupers get a break just once? What ridiculous amount are they charging for the software now?

  5. Change the media brand and I bet the problem goes away. Or just increase the compression DVDshrink uses to get the total file size down to say 4.2 GB or less.

First of all, I stopped labelling the DVDs right after the first lot. I even redid the first lot. It hasn't helped.

Second, I am using TDK's 1X-4X DVD-Rs at the moment. When I was recording CD-Rs, I never had a problem with TDK, so I trust them at the moment. Are you saying I shouldn't? There aren't exactly a bevy of choices where I am at the moment (the only other vaguely reputable brand here is Imation).

Is there a brand that will absolutely work, no questions asked? Or would I be better off switching to a Denon player like I intend to do anyway?

i agree with bob w, the problem sounds like a medium problem. if it was a dvdshrink or compression problem, you would see it all the way through the dvd.

Which medium would you recommend? I am limited in my choices at the moment.

Some of the problems lies in that Shrink, with the default setting will try to fill the DVD+-R disk to it's fullest. I changed the target file size to 4200 and I never have any problems with play at the end. Even with Princos, though I try to stick to Riteks go4 or go3 as well as TDK and others.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD!

I will give that setting a try with the next lot of discs that I burn.

I think you'll get better results with a smaller burn. The problem is dye uniformity and coverage out near the edge of the disc. Cheaper media tends to have more trouble with near-capacity burns. DVDShrink tries to maximize to within 20MB or so of the full capacity. If you leave a couple hundred megabytes unburned at the end it'll no doubt improve for you. 4.2 is a good place to start

Understood. I burned two or three DVDs today with that setting, and so far the problem has not reared its head again.

Which reminds me. If I want to redo other discs, is it worth going back to the source (ie the original pressed DVD), or will my DVD-R do?

Always use the original if you can. That way any errors you might have introduced in your copies won't be there, and there will be no additional compression.

Okay... I guess I should have asked this before I went on a wild backup spree.

Oh well, copying all the discs again isn't so bad, I guess.
