Anyone have this trouble with Plextor PX-708a DVDRW drive??

About a week ago, my plextor px-708a drive stopped reading/writing any regular CDs (this includes CDR, CDRW, store-bought PC-CDs and audio CDs). It still reads/burns all DVDRs, and DVD-Video though. Anyone have any problems like this with this drive?

Did you update to the latest firmware? There seems to be problems with the drive when using the latest firmware 1.06. Check the Plextor forum at cdfreaks.com for more help.

You could flash the drive with the 1.04 firmware and see if you still have the same problems. I use 1.04 firmware because I've read that too many have had problems when using 1.06 but on the other hand there are others who have said they have no problems using it.

Return it. Happened to me twice. DVD functions still worked but the CD functions stopped working (CD's not recognized, can't burn or read CD's)

Yes.. I am now on my 3rd one.... doing very limited CD burning.

If it dies again.. I will keep returning it...

I actually bought a backup NEC after the 708A died the first time. When it died a second time, the backup saved my ass.

Do the self test for the drive before you return it. The self test instruction is in the Plextor manual. I think if you're going to RMA back to Plextor they'll ask you to perform that self test first.

There have been reports that using firmware 1.06 you should use the latest version of NERO 6.3.1.6. You can check the Plextor forum for some information.
