    It's Crazy!!!!

I bought my NEC 1300a around December 1st, for $120 and was happy! By January 1st you could get one for $105 delivered.

Now for $70 you get the same features, but with 8x DVD+R and 4x DVD+RW burning.

Can you say no-brainer? I haven't bought a CDRW in over a year (when I got 300 32X's on closeout, still got 75).

    but newegg.com rocks!
they have one of the best price on the net.
i buy all my computer stuff and more from them. no tax and noshipping(most of time). and usually shipment arrives in 3 days.

Dayum if i didnt have a 510a & 107, i would jump on that. Newegg does have some great prices. I ALWAYS buy my stuff from them for a couple of years now. Myself & people i build comps for must be spending thousands a year.

But im thinking these huge price drops are due to the dual layer drives coming out any week now.

  5. I have read reviews that it is picky about media. If you wanted a Kprobe tester that would be a good buy. Otherwise I'd go for the BenQ DW822A DL capable for $99 at NE and in stock.

I was actually gonna buy that BenQ today, but i thought about it & like i said dual layer-ready drives should be coming any week now.
I admire BenQ for being the 1st out the gate with a dual layer compatible drive, but i'd rather spend $100-150 for a drive i know will be dual layer out the box. Call me crazy but i dont wanna take a risk on that FW. Plus who knows what speed it will be? Plus september is a looooong ways away. I know the media wont go into mass production til June/July & will be costly, but i dont wanna risk anything w/my next DVD burner purchase. :P

  7. IremainAMisterE - I think its the smart thing to do, what you're doing, wait a few weeks more if you can. Also BenQ should be coming out with one soon (DW830A) and it will have their 2nd generation guidance system (OPC).

That Lite-on just went up to $80.

Sounds like a good price, but for just a bit more (also from NewEgg)
    I would recommend the NEC.
the Lite-On is finicky. the discs burned in the Lite-on have
inconsistant compatibility, unlike the discs made in my NEC,
which play in everything that I've tried.
I've only had my NEC for a few weeks now, but it's by
    far the better product.

    just my experience. anyone else?
    also,
I have nothing against NEwEgg, but this sounds like an attemp
to unload some product. Go ahead, call me skeptical.

  10. yeah, have to agree,Lite-on dvd writers are shite.
better off waitng for a new pioneer or NEC.
forget any other brands, there performance is intermittent at best.

  11. I've owned the LDW-811S now for about a month, it's burned everything I've thrown at it flawlessly. +r and -r, compatibility is good among my 3 standalones, though I've used only Imation and Maxell media with it. I like it alot, I didn't get this kind of a deal on it though!

I noticed that the drive has a 2-MB buffer. I puchased a Sony DRU-500a back in December 2002 which cost $350 w/$50 rebate. It hurts to see that you can get burners now for < $70.00. The way I look at it is that I paid that $230 (350-50-70) difference for 1.5 years of experience in working with DVD burners. I do have a question though,

My Sony has an 8-MB buffer, what is the practical impact between the 2-MB and 8-MB buffers?

Most burners I see have a 2MB buffer and both Ive owned have it (Pioneer DVR-104 and NEC ND-1300A) and have both performed flawlessly with that. I always wondered what benefits the greater buffer would have as...even before I upgraded my RAM from 256 to 1024, I never had a problem burning at 2X or 4X.
