Cannot wipe or access a DVD/-RW/+RW disc

I have a DVD-RW and a DVD+RW disc which I use at home on a NEC 1300A burner. I have no problems with writing, reading or erasing in Nero 6 these discs on my own computer running Win98SE. But as soon as I bring a disc home to a friends HP writer running XP it will not even access the disc. The disc cannot be read and the computer just freezes, but the disc works fine when I get home.
Can there be a reason to suspect that the disc is locked to my computer and/or my operating system? Is there any way that I can reformat the discs at home before taking it home to my friend? Do I need to install XP? Any other suggestions?

Not all DVD burners read (or write, for that matter) DVD-RW/+RW.
It may simply be the type of burner your pal has and no, it isn't locked to just your PC.

Sorry, my mistake. In this case it was the DVD+RW and yes, his burner is a + burner and he himself has several DVD+RW discs, even the same brand as I have.

If you are writing data to the disc, your friend would need the same packet writing software installed on his/her system in order to read the data.

This does not apply to discs written in DVD Video format, only UDF format.

OK I accept that. In this case we are both using Nero 6 and the disc was written in UDF/ISO format.
