  1. I ripped a few DVDs and I want to make an AVI with it. I have the .VOB files and I used Gordian Knot to make AVS and AC3 (DVD2AVI) and VirtualDub).

I want to make it 640x340 (it's widescreen).
(Or 480x255 will be fine, too)

But with Nandub and Virtual Dub (I prefer Nandub), the movie file qill take ~180000MB , which is way too much

So I want to know what I can to to make a 23 minute AVI ~150-180MB and keep the quality in less than 1:30 hour... can anyone tell me how?

(I need an answer fast because I only have ~4 gigs left on my computor, I ripped 5 DVDs............. and i want to get rid of the 30 Gigs i saved just for those 5 dvds...)

  2. What you need to do is compress to some MPEG4 derivative such as DivX or XviD (i like this one). What you've done is probably saved it as a raw, uncomprssed AVI. I recommend using one of VDub's Precise BiCubic resize filters. Make your file's average bitrate about 1100 kbit/s
My AVI -> Any Format Guide is available here.
My Frame Resize Calculator (enhanced for Virtualdub) is available here

  4. I'll try what you told me to do after, funkguy4.

About AutoGK, I saved the .vob files onto my computor using DVDdecrypter but everytime I select the input directory, it says "Input directory does not contain a vaild DVD structure ripped by DVDDecrypter."

    What did I do wrong?

(And approximately how much time would AutoGK take if I want to make a 640x340 180MB AVI file?)

Sounds to me that you are not using compression when transcoding. That is a very bad idea because an uncompressed video will easily take Gigs of your hard drive.... what you want is compression and thats what codecs do...

If you want, try this website...

provides a general overview between Divx and WM9 but doesn't include Xvid which is fast and free and can compress your file really well or the other popular codecs...

HuffYuv is another popular one.. it has several advantages over Divx, Xvid, and WM9... mainly its speed and the fact that its lossless meaning transcoding from MPEG2 (ur DVD video) to HuffYuv will result in NO (maybe some depending on ur setting) loss in quality and also the file sizes are shorter than what you would have with uncompressed video.. the only dissavantage to HuffYuv is that it doesnt compress as well as Divx or Xvid.. a 4 min. HuffYuv AVI can be around 1.5 Gigs.. and in Divx it can be 2 - 7mb.. depending on your settings.
