If you take a microphone with XLR output plug, and need to convert it to RCA so it will plug into my recorder, is it possible to do it and still have the stereo sound? Or will the XLR-to-RCA adaptor/splitter give me a mono soundtrack? This is like going from 2 channels into 1, back to 2. So i'm wondering if it'll work before i buy the XLR mic...?

most mics are not stereo mics .. if they are , they would have 2 xlr's or a special mini jack (s) as for a sony MD recorder
xlr's are balanced audio connectors (ussually) and mic xlr should not go directly to a rca (unbalanced) except through a convertor (ussually mic to line) ...
also -- what sound card has a rca as a mic input ?
i guess some real cheapo radio shack mics might have rca connectors or if the mic has a built in line amp (some do) ...
most good or even halfway good stereo mics are condenser mics also - meaning they require power from the mic preamp ... those for sure you can not just throw a xlr to rca connector onto (not that you should on dynamic mics either)"Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
I'm not using a soundcard, but a camcorder. Since i am recording video from the AV/IN socket of the camcorder, the MIC input becomes obsolete and i must connect the external mic to the audio RCA wires that are plugged into the AV/IN. So i'm trying to find a good quality mic, which are usually XLR-equipped, but i have to plug 'em to the RCA plugs.

AV/IN is line level in ..... which mics are not ...
or you would need a mic with a line level out ...
you sure you dont have a aux/mic input also ? might be a mini jack .. take a tip/ring/sleeve mini jack .."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
anyway if you want just a xlr (balanced) to RCA (unbalanced) convertor ..
you can buy them anywhere ....
but as i stated - they are not for mics ..."Each problem that I solved became a rule which served afterwards to solve other problems." - Rene Descartes (1596-1650) -
ya i do have another MIC input, but i can't use it. When you set the camcorder to act as a recording device for the analogue video input source, it seems to only accept connections from the AV/IN socket, which has 3 RCA plugs. It won't let you plug a bullet camera to the RCA video input and your mic into the MIC jack. This is the problem i'm trying to work around.

then get an in-line mic to line level preamp or a preamplified mic
