I have an older Pyro 1394 enclosure...I was thinking about putting in it either a 16x DVD-ROM, 4x DVD-RW, or 48x24x48 CD-RW. The only thing that concerns me is that this is an older Firewire case, and so doesn't use the "Oxford" chip. I know that as far as hard drives are concerned, I can only get about half the speed with the non-Oxford as I can with my newer, presumably Oxford-based, case.
Anyone have any suggestions? I like to use the 16x DVD-ROM to rip audio CD's and SVCD's...will putting it in an external case affect either the ripping speed or data integrity?

It should work, but you will have to test it. A good option is to place your current internal DVD or CD-R in the external case and test.
