if I see a m2v file, is this the same as a mpg file? What's the difference?

    Thanks!!

  2. An m2v file is an mpeg2 file without audio. An mpg file usually has audio but there can be cases where they don't.
Do you remember when TMPGEnc needed an English patch?

    thanks!

    is this true...

    is a m2v always MPEG2 without audio?

is a .mpg file be either mpeg1 or mpeg2, mostly with audio, but sometimes can be without audio track.

    is this the deal?

  4. These are Windows extensions and unfortunately not all applications are uniformed regarding their use. Normally m2v is an elementary stream and mpg is a system stream. But then, CCE adds mpv to the elementary stream. Others add mp2 for mpeg2 elementary video stream whereas audio tools understand mp2 as mpeg1 layer 2 audio. If you're not sure it's best to open the file with some MPEG utility (like the MPEG tools built into TMPGEnc) and will tell you what it is.

this may sound stupid, but why do they call a "system" file, one which has both audio & video streams (or more?) and an "elementary file" one which only has audio or video stream?

    just curious.

    thanks!
