  1. I wanted to start capturing some video, however, I have a radeon 9700pro that is not an all in wonder card. I also have a geforce 2 ultra ti from a while back that has VIVO that I was thinking about putting that in my system also. Is there any way I can switch between these two cards without any problems when I feel like using the VIVO? (like enabling or disabling drivers?)

Also, I have a winTV card that is about 3 years old. Do you think I should just try and use that instead of geforce2 with VIVO for capturing?

One more thing...I have another computer that I'm not using that is a 700mhz AMD. Do you think I should just throw one of those cards in this machine and use that for capturing? Is this computer fast enough?

What is the best idea? Sorry if this is confusing.

  2. well...this thread is probably too long to hold most peoples attention.

in other words, should i use my happauge tv card or geforce2 ti w/ VIVO to record video through my computer?

  3. Not sure about switching between two cards but it sounds to me like windows is not gonna like it...

what hauppage card do you have? and what kind of captures do you wanna do and what are you planning to do with them? I have the original wintv-pvr (not 250 or 350) and it works good for me with tweaked drivers... I use it for capturing VHS and TV (with virualdub) and put it on dvd....

  4. yeah....i might just use the happauge. its one of the first ones made, i got it about 4 years ago. i'll give it a try and see how it works out. I don't need that great of quality, i was just gonna try and record some tv shows so i could watch them at a later time.

  6. Ok... Well if quality is not an issue I guess the hauppauge software would cover all your needs as it's really simple to use also...

I found a quite interesting page about the hauppauge cards here:
    http://www.shspvr.com/

They have a nice forum as well.

Don't forget to download the latest drivers too...

I use a Hauppauge WinTV PCI card (stereo) for capturing TV and and then authoring to DVD - works fine (Athlon 2400+ so the CPU usage is not high). If you were using a lower end PC then one with a inbuilt MPEG2 encoder might be better

If you gonna use your Hauppauge card, then forget the official software. Install latest btwincap drivers and for capturing use virtualvcr and virtualdub. Capturing at any framesize is possible, but for top quality you have to capture at 704 x 576/480 and then resize to whatever you wish (example: 352 x 576/480). Direct captures at the 352 x 576/480 framesize are blurry.

If your nvidia card has a video in fuction, then if you manage to make it work, gonna give you better quality with smaller framesizes (like 352 x 576/480). But you need to find the correct drivers (older cards - those with gforce 2 - usually work best with wdm 1.08 drivers for capture) and while capturing with virtualdub is possible, it is not an easy thing ...

You can use your AMD 700 with win2k/ hauppauge and pic mjpeg codec for capturing without problems.

  9. Thanks for all the replies, I ended up installing the winTV card with the newest drivers. I was having some problems with virtualvcr and flyds so I am using iuvcr right now. It is working great and I like the built-in scheduler alot. I have been using the picvideo codecs and recording at 352x240. The results seems to be pretty good so far.

352x480 seems like an odd ratio to capture at. It doesn't fill up the screen fully when you expand it. There is still a bunch of room on the sides. (I think that is the resolution, I'm not at my home right now so I can't check)

Not sure what sort of machine or HD arrangement you have, but as I noted, capturing with an Athlon 2400+ to a secondary 7200 RPM ATA 133 (250G drive) I can capture with the Hauppague at 720x576 using IUVCR with no frame drops at all. Of course the picture has to be de-interlaced after if being authored to DVD - that is a nuisance
