How long are the movies? 60 to 90 minutes of movie should fit without much effort. iDVD should be able to do the encoding and burning.

  4. For an inexpensive encoder go grab MMT EZ, and encode it to a DVD MPEG2. Then you will need to get a requantizer/re-encoder like DVD2OneX and shrink it to a proper size. The shrinker is what will cost you money, but it is well worth it. If you cannot afford the shrinker then make sure the Bitrate is set correctly in MMT EZ. Use a bitrate calculator like the one in FFMPEGX to make sure the Video_TS comes in around 4300 MB.

93 min bit rate of about 5-6Mbps, 120 min bit rate of about 4Mbps. All this assuming mp2 or AC3 audio. There is a Java bit rate calculator somewhere on this site, maybe check the tools section.

Encoding, and then shrinking will give lesser quality than just getting the encoding right the first time.

I didn't realise that iMovie had some sort of file size limit. OK, I'm out of my area now, good luck with your solution.

  9. He is saying that instead of requantizing/reencoding, just make sure the encoding step gave you the right size in the first place. Baking the loaf of bread so it fits in the breadbox is better than squishing a much too big loaf inside. So use a proper bitrate (MMT EZ is adjustable) for your length iMovie and you won't have to use DTOX.
