  1. I can get a picture with my AIW 9800SE, in MMC 8.9 and in VirtualDub, but I still can't get any sound, and I'm sure I've got all the right external connections.

I'm aware of a connection that has to be made between my video card and my sound card, but having had a look inside my case, I really wouldn't know which one to put where - all the cables appear to be in some slot or other already, and I don't want to go disconnecting the wrong ones.

Here are some pictures which hopefully somebody might be able to use to point me in the right direction...

This one's the AIW 9800SE, as I'm sure you've figured. As far as I can see there's only one cable running from this card, and that's the one in the foreground at the top of the picture.

    Thanks for any help.

The output connectors from your card(the plug with the 3 or 4 cables coming out) should have a 1/8" phono plug that looks like a headphone plug. You need to plug that into your soundcard's input which should be right next to where your external speakers plug in.

  3. So from what I understand you're saying, that phono plug, which comes from inside the PC, needs to be plugged into a socket which is outside the computer (next to where my speaker plug goes in)? How does that work? Do I need to drill a whole in my PC case or something?!

    Sorry for being completely ignorant!

  4. The better way is to connect your card like this (my tv card is linked to my sound card with this type of connection).

You simply need a 3,5 mm stereo jack cable to link your cards like this one:

The best way to wire the card is internally using the 3 (or is it 4?) prong AUX channel, wired from ATI to soundcard.

No sounds means ATI MMC or other drivers not installed good.

Uninstall EVERYTHING that is ATI and try again.

Thanks both of you for the tips. Although I'm not sure, it looks as though there is an internal connection between the AIW to the sound card - can anyone confirm this from those pictures above (it's an nForce 2 so sound is integrated, and anyway, surely I wouldn't be sold a PC without that vital connection already made)? So I'll try reinstalling everything ATI, and if that doesn't work, I'll try that phono connection. Thanks.

  7. OK I can capture with picture and sound, now (how novel!)!

Just one more question... in VirtualDub, when I'm capturing, I don't get any sound, but on the AVI file which is created, there is sound and its good. Is that normal? Or is there someway of actually listening to what you're capturing, too?

    P.S. Thanks for the help!
