The new Panasonic DMR-E55 standalone DVD recorder was released in the UK today, and I was hoping to buy a multiregion version. However, the following email, which I received from Panasonic this evening, makes clear that no multiregion version has been produced by the company
'Panasonic UK do not produce the DMR E55 as a multi region unit. If you have seen the DMR E55 advertised as multi region then the dealer selling the unit would have modified the machine themselves. However, this does invalidate the guarantee and if a fault should occur within this one year period then you would be liable for repair costs.
At this time we will not be taking pre orders for multi region units.'
UK retailers 24-7 are advertising a multiregion version. Does anyone know if there's a hack for the machine or whether it's being chipped by the retailers offering multiregion units?

A hack would take time to do and find, I imagine most retailers aren't going to bother doing that (especially if they don't know how). However, there would be a great number of them who know how to make DVD players multiregional. So, I imagine they are modifying the hardware.
If everything is infinite then nothing is definite. -
I pre-ordered one from an online retailer at £246.40 with free delivery and just had an email asking if I wanted it to be made multiregion !!
"Due to popular demand, the Panasonic DMR-E55BS DVD Recorder can now be multi-regioned at a cost of £20. Please confirm by return email if you wish us to do the same on your order."

Thanks for the tip. I ordered mine from Multiregionmagic.co.uk in the end. They're selling modified dmr-e55s for £249.00. Next day postage is £10. The reports I read on the newsgroups suggest that the company is very reliable.

Thanks for the link, I don't need multiregion so I contacted the company to see how much an unmodded unit would be.
As they state on their site that the get them in unmodded and mod them themselves, I would have assumed that a region 2 would be a bit cheaper as there would be no work needed.
I got a reply that they would supply an unmodded unit "at the same price"
??
