  1. I have converted a 3-hour movie to DVD (m2v) using TMPGEnc.
To make it fit the 4,38 GB disc, I had to use a very low bit rate; 2300 KBit/s (CBR).

When viewed on a Kiss DP-450 DVD player it looks OK, but on a Sony Playstation 2 it becomes blocky in scenes with "fast motion".

I'm not sure that "blocky" is the right word to use, but it looks a little like a progressive JPEG image just before it is fully loaded.

It seems like Playstation has a hard time decoding the movie.

When I use higher bit rates as 3500-4000 KBit/s it looks a lot better.

BTW, once I tried 2-pass VBR but that DVD wouldn't Playstation play at all.
But I'm not sure about that, maybe something else went wrong.
    I have not repeated it.

Is Playstation just a lousy DVD player?

Am I right or have I missed something?

    Please let me know.

  2. The PS2 kinda blows I ended up buying a new DVD player just because I couldn't stand it. My old player was great, but it couldn't play DVDrs so obviously it was time to upgrade.

What authoring program are you using? I know the PS2 has issues with some dvd features, so maybe lower bitrates is one of them. For instance, my ps2 won't play movies I author that have multiple titles. It'll play the first one, but that's it, and if I go back to the menu I can't view video (though audio is fine). Bleh.

  3. DVD players are cheap nowdays. Go out and get a dedicated set-top. I like my PS2, but as the main player in myentertainment center? No.

You didn't specify, but if you encoded your 3 hour movie at a resolution of 720x480 with a 2300kbps it will probably look like hell on any DVD player. Try encoding at 352x480 instead.

  5. actually the ps2 is kind of a terrible dvd player. I had one disc similar to yours, except that the original was some crazy svcd put onto a dvdr (i made it). On the ps2 the thing looked horrible, blockiness, rough edges (especially that). etc.
However if it was played on any other set top player (or pc) it looked wonderful.

Also noticed this on an official release too (wild style). On the ps2, it had many artifacts and other crap, on regular set tops it played great.

the ps2 should strictly just be used for games, not movies as it doesn't do a good job at all.
