  1. I just purchased a cyberHome DVD recorder. I have been converting my VHS home movies to DVD. Everything works fine. Now I would like to edit the DVD's I made and burn them back to DVD. I want to cut some sections out. I recorded them as one chapter. However if I explore the DVD they are broken up into several VOB and IFO files. Seems I can only find information on editing MPEG's or AVI. Is there a program or combination of programs that I would use to do this? Since they are home movies the DVD's have no copy protection. Thanks

Use vobedit and load the first vob(not the video_ts vob) in and select demux all video and audio and then import to tmpgenc dvd author and you can edit portions of the video out.You can try and import the main vobs themself but i found tmpgenc dvd author would not recognize certain vobs in series.

  3. Thanks, I'll give it a try. I'll let others know how it works out in case they want to do the same.

  4. two softwares. TMPGENC DVD author is the (IMO) best. It will do exactly what you are looking for. What you could do, however, is use dvddecrypter to rip the dvd to your hard drive as one big file. There is a settings that says "rip as one big file" in the one of the preferences tab.

  5. Well, I almost got it. Did what johnsO said to do. Editing was very easy. The final video looked good. I was able to remove all the "snow" from the inbetween scenes from turing the camcorder on and off. However there was no sound on the new DVD created with tmpgenc dvd author. I did select demux video and audio from vobedit.
I did not try macleod suggestion yet. I didn't think I would need dvd-decrypter since the dvd is not copy protected. Did I miss something perhaps in tmpgenc that controls the sound?

Went and looked at dvddecrypter. I don't see a preference tab, nor do I see a setting for "rip as one big file". I have version 3.20. Whereabouts is this setting?

  6. I am trying to do the same as Macko.

I have transferred about 7 hours of analog camcorder video of my kids growing up onto RW-DVDs. I next want to edit/clip these VOB files so as to have just the best clips on a single DVD to play back in my old age.

I’ve tried Roxo Easy CD/DVD it doesn’t accept the audio in my files.

I’ve tried Nero 6 with almost all the plug-ins, and although I can edit the Vob files and assemble a nice movie when I play it back some sections have a terrible sound distortion or silence making the hours I spent editing all the clips a complete waste of my time!

After reading the advice here, I tried Tmpgenc DVD Author v 1.5.13.44, but I didn’t like it, although sound has been transferred to the new Vob’s it created, when editing in play mode there was no sound available, obviously as well as editing out unwanted video you want to edit out sections with bad sound right? Then in the help files I read “It is possible to cut-edit the file and to output it without the with the Sound Player plug-in, but you won't hear the sound while editing”.

I then found ver 1.5.20.62 + the Sound Player on E-donkey and now every thing is almost perfect, except for you have two TMPGEncDVDAuthor.exe one will edit with sound but fails to output, and the other has no sound when editing, but this can be gotten round by saving before the output stage then switching to the other program.

BTW Macko, thanks for giving a descriptive title, so many idiots put i.e. “Can't Figure out what I'm Doing Wrong” or “Help” these descriptions are no good to anyone trawling through the forums looking for information, rather than bother folks with repetitive questions.

You can copy the DVD to your hardrive and then edit the VOB's directly with Womble Video Wizard. It will output mpegs which will then need to be re-authored for burning back to disk.

If the output is as MPEGs and then re-authored back to Vob files would there be any loss of quality?

No, the change from mpeg to VOB (or M2V and MP2 streams) and back does not involve any conversion of the video. It's only a multiplexing of the audio and video streams.

As well, Womble will not re-encode the video unless you add transitions or other affects. If you're only cutting and splicing then quality remains intact.
