  1. OK, a friend of mine gave me a data DVD of some films he made.

They are a backup copy of a playable DVD of his.

When I browse the DVD I find 2 folders:

    Audio_TS and Video_TS

I'd like to create a MPEG2 and burn my own editted custom DVD complete with menus, etc. using TMPGEnc DVD Author.

I tried to just load the files using the Add DVD feature but it had no audio and I couldn't seem to make changes to chapter setup, etc.

So how can I just create a MPEG2 from this data DVD?

The mpeg2 (video) is found in the VOBs in the VIDEO_TS dir, together with audio of some format (mp2/ac3/lpcm).
These can be extracted (demuxed) with VobEdit or ReJig (from the VOBs), and then re-authored with TMPGEnc DVD Author or other authoring application.

  3. Have another question.

If I wanted to create a .avi file from the above VOBs what program would I need to do that?

This isn't copy protected stuff with all the anti copy devices so I wouldn't want to have to buy DivX to do it. Is there a program that can convert the VOBs to .avi?

Can VirtualDub be used? I have that already.

Not VOBs, but mpeg/ac3/mp2/lpcm (what you get after demuxing) works fine. There's a version of VirtualDub that can take mpeg2 as input, and encode to AVI. But if it's a DVD already, there are many "all in one" DVD to AVI rippers/encoders. EasyDivX is one...
