  1. Hi,

I've been trying to get some of my Cowboy Bebop avi's onto vcd, having had some success ripping dvds in the past. The trouble is that during playback of the Bebop vcd's on my Wharfedale dvd-750 there is a lot of video and audio stuttering in the high action scenes, notably fight scenes and sequences with lots of moving white light, like fighter engines and things. Video and Audio remains perfectly synched before and after stuttering.

The converted (pre-burn) mpeg plays fine on my PC as does the VCD through Power-DVD, but once it's in my DVD player it's unwatchable during high motion scenes.

I'm using TMPGenc to convert the avis to VCD mpegs and I've tried various settings, but with no visible difference to hardware playback. I also tried the default PAL VCD settings provided with TMPGEnc with no success.

I describe it as stuttering, but it really reminds me of the effects you get when you play something like Q3A on a low-end PC, like the hardware just can't keep up... I do _not_ mean the jerkiness seen in long panning scenes.

Has anyone who's had success converting this sort of stuff offer me some guidance, please?

    Cheers,

  2. Sound like your patient is suffering from BITRATEtopia....I suggest providing heavy doses of BITRATE. The heavier the dose of BITRATE the better. Along with 2 asprin and call me in the morning.

  3. Thanks for the hint.

I've tried with the default CBR 1150 and dual-pass VBR (which I think I've read won't work with VCD anyway)... any suggestions what BR I should use? Is there a maximum or minimum or am I just gonna have to search for the sweet spot?

    Thanks again,

  4. first bitrate is bitrate regardles if its CBR or VBR......However, the opposite may be true as well, if you have given to high of a bitrate for your player ou will get this porblem too. so yes in essense you have to find the sweet spot for your player....try about 1500 for your video.

  5. Righto. First off - apologies to KDiddy for the hassle... I should have posted all this in the Newbie forum. I also should have searched harder for an answer before asking.

You were right, I dropped the bitrate (just by 50) and it fixed the stutter, but I was getting judders on pan scenes still.

Looking harder at my source, the avi's, I *ahem* noticed they were NTSC format (352x240 @ 29.97(?)fps) and I was making them into PAL VCD (352x288 @ 25fps) mpeg in the mistaken assumption that that was what my DVD player needed. Just for kicks I encoded them straight to NTSC VCD and burned one episode onto CDRW and guess what? It worked fine at the default bitrate.

Now I look around it seems this is an elementary mistake, so sorry to have wasted your time. At least I learned something, though. And I can now watch my Bebop from the comfort of my armchair instead of having to sit in front of the monitor.

    Cheers again,
