Depends on your source, especially the resolution, and what you're trying to produce. It's best to match the output to the input. Tweeking the settings to get the best quality is done by the operator, not by a template. The templates only give you the basic settings.

If you're obsessive about quality, you can adjust the basic TMPGenc DVD template. Load the basic DVD template and set it for VBR with the minimum, average, and maximum set at the maximum DVD bitrate (varies based on audio bitrate). Then set motion search to the best. This allows about an hour per disc and takes a very long time.

This is not very efficiant, however. You can adjust the average and minimum bitrate and get much more on your DVD disc without any loss in quality.

This is due to the fact that many scenes in a film don't require this magnitude of bitrate. In other words, if size is no issue, you don't really need a template. Most films don't require the maximum DVD bitrate. Most of the templates on the internet are for situations where you need maximum quality with minimum size.

If you want a template that does this, try one of KVCD's templates. For DVD, I believe you can get up to 5 hours at a quality that is very similar to that described above.

I've never heard anyone suggesting setting the MIN, AVG and MAX of a VBR encode all to the same level?

Oh wait I have ... it's called a CBR encode hehehe

  5. Some months ago I was searching for templates in Internet that are specifically geared to high/low original bitrates, different incarnation of DivX and Xvid. It turned out that such templates never exist or they were never put to public domain.
    Where are the real guru?
