Question on some verbatim media and ver 1.40 firmware on this pioneer drive. They make a disc that the front looks like an 8mm rool of film. It states 4x and has a disclaimer on the back that damage can be caused if it is used on drives that don't support 4x. The firmware update say the it will make the drive compatiable with 4x media however, the max burn speed with this firmware update is 2x. The verbatim doesn't state that it is 1-4x. Can I use this media without fear of damage to my burner? Has anyone else used this media in this burner. I ask because I have an 8mm film transfer project and I think it would be very cool to use these discs.

Was another topic on this yesterday but Pioneer.com said for a long time not to use high speed disks in their 104 recorders cause they can catch flambe. I forgot what their solution was but I think theyjust gave you another unit.

Handyguy, Where have you heard this rumor about the 104's catching flambe?(you mean fire?).I've had my 104 for about 2 years now and have been using Ritek 4x media for a while with no problems. Have firmware 1.40 or 1.41 installed, don't remember.

it seems the ver 1.40 is the latest. I went to pioneer.com last night and checked for a more updated ver but found none. I ran the version checker program and it said I had the latest version installed.
Mike V-- your using ritek 4x media, but it will only burn at 2x, is this correct? That is how pioneer makes it sound. And are your ritek disc's listed as 1-4x or straight 4x. I would assume that if it is listed as 4x they would burn at your burner's max rating, however I hate to assume. -
I can only burn them at the max for the Pioneer 2x. I think the 1.41 version of firmware is the hacked version that allows multireigon. I don't use anything but the Pioneer official so mine must be version 1.40. Never checked to see if the Ritek G04s were rated as 1-4x. They were listed as Ritek 4x DVD-R.

You can find the official 1.41 version here:

I can burn 4X DVD-R discs at 2X speed with this firmware without any problems.Ronny
