4.7gb but says 1.99gb used

Just got a liteon 851 burner i'm trying 2 copy a dvdr to a dvdr but alcohol says theres not enough space on the disk & when i look at the properties in my computer it says 1.99gb used & 0 bytes free. Nero wouldnt work either. it happens on ME & XP (dual boot) with +r & -r & i have the latest firmware, i have managed 2 rip & burn a dvd with dvd decripter & alcohol & also copy a few ps2 games allthough b4 i firmware patched.

Any help from a grateful newbie would be appreciated.

Have you tried more than one blank disk? If not, then I'd guess that your 'blank' disk might already have 1.99Gb of stuff on it.

like i said it happens on +r & -r so yes i have tried more than 1 blank disk,
the disk does not have stuff on it. it's fresh off the spindle.

i would take the spindle back...what kind of discs are they (brand)?

Now we know what they do with the used disks when you return a bad spindle, complete with the failed burn.

They repackage the bad burned disks and foist them off on somebody.

I don't know where the 1.99 can be coming from. Can you run Infotool or somesuch, see if it actually says there is 1.99 of data of some kind on it? Absolutely should not be.

Try a reflash, just for the hell of it. It will work. Just redid mine today, as I forgot whether I did, and W2k doesn't give you firmware in Device Manager as 98 does. Flash tool said flashing XXXX to XXXX, same to the same, so it will work.

the prob occured with the free +r disk i got with the drive as well as the pack of 25 spindle i got separatly so that can't be the reason.
I know i flashed it coz b4 alcohol wouldn't read a ps2 image & after i flashed it it did, so that can't be the reason either.
What happens when u go in my computer on a blank dvdr, does it say 4.7 free?

Ah, you did do the firmware.

Which version of Nero are you using? When I got my 851, as a replacement for a bad 811, I flashed to newest firmware. Nero 5.5.10.54 didn't see it. Went to 6.3.0.3 to be able to use it. I take that back, Nero put out 5.5.10.56, which I thought would correct it. Still had to go to 6.3.0.3. Now it works.

Problem is you have to buy 6.0 Nero, no upgrade between numbers.

Try that.

i'm using Nero 6.3.0.2 full install, both this & alcohol say theres not enough space on the disk, not that it can't see the drive. i wonder if i downgrade the firmware it will work. i'll try that.

i'm just looking in cd/dvd manager in alcohol
the source disk says used space 4.38gb 510:46:46
the target disk says used space 0mb & free space 4.38gb 510:38:38

seems a bit strange as they are both from the same spindle
in Xp i dont get the 1.99gb used problem but still get the not enough space to copy error on nero & alcohol
i'd rather not downgrade the firmware coz of the risks involved & warranty issues

The +r disk i got with the drive is even lower
the -r disk i got is 510:38:38
