  1. Ive seen a lot of articles about updating firmware I have a new liteon 451s and it seems to do everything I need.what benefits are to be gained by updating firmware

    Well, if you update your firmware with a modded 851s firmware, you can write at 8x on most 4x media...

    Works just like an 851s

    I have the 451s with the 851s firmware.

  3. If you do the 451-851 conversion and f it up in the process, don't return it, throw it away.
    But to answer your question, it is usually to add more media support/recognition, and I believe the newest firmware allows bitsetting for +r/rw.

    You failed to mention that you can go back to your original firmware if you do, in fact, "f it up." Get the correct firmware flasher and you will not have to worry... Also, there is a flashfix or something... can't remember right at this particular second... that will allow you to go back to the 451s firmware as long as you patch the 451s firmware before trying to reflash.
