  1. Hopefully nothing I say here is too stupid, afterall I am a newbie. I seem to be doing everything "ok", and have researched the articles at the left...I swear. I'm using DVDXCOPY Platinum to do backups, and that's working great. I'm using Nero 6 to burn downloads, but can't watch anything I download/burn on my stand alone DVD player. I can watch the backups done by DVDXCOPY however. Here are my questions: What do I need to change/start doing to watch downloads on stand alone? Thanks!

Interesting. Check and see if you've done the following:

After downloading, do you convert the video to an MPEG-DVD format?

After converting to an MPEG-DVD format, do you author the files into DVD files, e.g. .BUPs, .IFOs. etc.?

After authoring the files, do you burn them onto a DVD?
    Hello.

DVD Shrink (freeware) to back-up DVDs

Try making a VCD and then move on to DVD , the learning process is not as steep.

Virtualdub MP3 Freeze (freeware) to check for errors in AVIs , If you're going to download expect a lot of cr#ppy files.
TMPGenc (free for mpeg1) to convert to Mpeg1 (vcd format)
Nero 6 (which you already have ) to burn to CD-R

  6. If I'm understanding the replies and the articles, first I download my video (AVI, DIVx, etc.). Then convert it to an mpeg file using TMPEGEnc wizard, and then author it using TMPEGE Author....then write it to a R+. Am I on the right track? ---Personal note: The dickhead who responded "fuckit...no comment" is the type of person that makes forums a pain in the ass. I HAVE been reading the articles and looking things up in the glossary, but quite frankly a lot of it may as well be in Portugese. I'm sure if I'd been doing this since 2001 I'd know a lot about it as well, but it's a lot of info to learn in a short time. It's too bad there isn't a forum somewhere called "kicking the shit out of ********", I'd be more than happy to tell people how to do it. That I do know something about. To those of you who are more than patient and helpful....many, many thanks.

Yes they are the steps exactly , I would suggest using virtualdub mp3 freeze before encoding with TMPGenc . There are so many dodgy files around that you really need to clean the files up if required otherwise your encoder will stop and you will have wasted quite a bit of time.

  8. When I try to download TMPGenc, it keeps telling me that the file is corrupted, and I'm doing it from the company link. What's that all about?

When you try to play your downloaded files in your standalone what happens? Do you get an error message (i.e. disc error) or does the film start to play and then freeze? What kind of problem are you experiencing?

  11. No dice. I keep getting a dialog box telling me the compressed file is inavalid or corrupted. This is pissing me off too, my smilies aren't working....and it says Smilies are ON. Everything about this whole damn process is complicated. It's a good thing today's Saturday because all this run around is driving me to drink.

  12. LaddyDaddy--It tells me that it's not a recognized disk. Only on the burned downloads, backups work just fine.....same disks used for both. (brand, DVD+R)

  13. It sounds like the DVD is not authored properly. Download ifoedit from the tools section. Open it and in the lower left hand corner click the open button. Navigate to the VIDEO_TS folder and choose one of the IFO files. After you do that, click on the "get VTS sectors" button. If the files are not authored properly a new pop will appear. I can't remember what it will say but click OK as it will make changes in your file. Keep clicking OK on the popups until they go away. Try burning your new VIDEO_TS folder. By the way, when you open Nero to burn the folder, are you choosing DVD-VIDEO as the format?

  14. No, I'm just using DVD..not DVD video. When I try to use it, it gives me a pop-up saying the "compliance test failed and the dvd may be unplayable".

  15. Check out this link http://www.nero.com/us/631927293720980.html#9. According to the Nero web site your video may not be authored properly. Try using ifoedit as I suggested earlier before you try to burn in Nero. Then try the DVD-VIDEO format. Ifoedit should correct the the files so they are compliant. Let us know how you make out.
