  1. Looking for a simple setup to record a phone call.

    A Radio Shack box maybe?
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

Can't get much simpler or cheaper than one of these, from your local RS.

Another thing you can do is use phone recording software. There are several products on the market that will let you record calls with your modem directly to your HDD. Cost more than the simple solution above, though.
Ethernet (n): something used to catch the etherbunny

That'd work. If your modem has voice modem capabilities, you could connect the phone line to the modem and then out to your phone and use Windows Sound Recorder to record whatever goes over that line.

Be careful -- simply recording a phone call can be illegal (depends on state law).

  4. i got one that is pretty good, it cost $2 at a flea market.

basically its like a coupler, but it has a mini-jack on a wire coming out, i connect it to the line in port on my soundcard and it records really well.

the only setting you really have to mess with is making sure your line in isnt too loud.. the recorded fie sounds really distorted if so

  5. STUPID!

    JUST STUPID!

The laws is, you can only record someone if they agree that you can record them.

    Sure, that will work

    Person1: I'm recording this call
    Person2: Click

    DUMB! DUMB! DUMB! DUMB!...

I have a similar little suction cup gadget in the pic. Mine can be connected to a recorder, sound card or to a little battery operated amp that came with it so that you can listen to the phone call even from an extension without picking up the receiver. I haven't used it in years though but it was a fun trick to pull on the kids.

I have fun with the local phone company, cable, bank etc.. who have this prerecorded message "This call may be monitored for quality control purposes". When the "human" finally comes on the line I just repeat the msg " I must advise you that this call may be monitored for quality control purposes". I get a slight pause at the other end but great service and no one has yet questionned my statement. 8)

btw) I am not recording anything just repeating their automated msg

    Marco33:
Police and court cases aside, the law as it is practiced by businesses is that they must advise the person that they are recording or monitoring and then it is implied that you agree by staying on the line you don't need to say yes.

In SC and GA the law is that at least one person in the phone call must know they are being recorded, thus if the person who is doing the recording knows they are recording then everything is okay in the eyes of the law.

  8. I called the local Police station. They said that I have to tell the person I'm recording them and they have to agree that it's ok to be recorded.

legality aside, I've used the Radio Shack suction cup pickup for tons of phone interviews, works great.

This was the product endorsed by phonelosers(.org). They have more information at their site. Phonelosers is one of the most hilarious sites on the net(they make prank phone calls), and they know their telephones. They even have a device that will intercept a phone signal if you used a wireless phone.

As for software, try using CallWave. I used it a while back and it was very simple, easy to use and best of all - free.

If you are on a dial up modem then it's hard to beat ModemSpy. Records everything in a wav file. And I think it's free and they ask for a donation if you wish to donate.
