When I record from a VHS-cassette with poor recording quality and have set the E30 to SP-mode I have found that the recording format actually switches several times between SP and LP mode back and forth! Thus the frame size changes between 704x576 and 352x576!
Has anybody else already has observed this behaviour? I had not used the FR-mode! Should I look for a repair or exchange or is this a normal behaviour of the E30??

Morning!
Yes, if it's the same as the e50 go into the recording mode and look for an option that says something like vbr mode auto, change this to fixed.
It does not change the unit from recording in variable bit rate but it fixes the resolution at the default for that size, e.g. 704 x 576 (480 NTSC) and won't drop to the lower resolutions even if there is a bit rate shortage. Note that with some noisy sources this can mean a slight increase in macro blocking.
Its probably being caused by the fact that, as you mention, you have a noisy VHS source which is eating up quite a lot of the bitrate, if there is then a lot of fast action on screen the unit is probably dropping to the lower frame size to preserve its bit rate / picture quality. All this is only a problem when you are planning on recording onto DVD-R for use on other machines or planning on importing the show via DVD RAM onto a PC for editing authoring !

Thank you for the fast response!
I will try that! Your explanation sound very logical.
Yes indeed if you view this kind of recording from the DVD-RAM you do not notice the frame size change, but if you import it to a PC and want to process it the trouble comes.
