thay say that a SVCD can be 35-60min long
i would like to know what is the biggest factor that can determine if the SVCD will be 35 min long or 60 min long. What value i can adjust when converting a avi to svcd so i can change it to be longer.
I would also know how long can it be on a 80 min CDR ?

Lower bitrate=longer playing SVCD=lower quality. Depends on what quality you want.

35-60 minutes is for a 700 MB (or 80 minute) CDR. SVCD is based on a 2x player, so technically speaking 40 minutes is optimum.
It depends on the movie. That's all I can say, some talking head chick flicks look great at 60 minutes/disk. Some action movies really look good only at 40 minutes per disk. All that is based on 2-pass VBR. CBR makes all the estimates invalid. To Be, Or, Not To Be, That, Is The Gazorgan Plan -
If you use TMPGEnc to encode your SVCD, there is an option for 'auto' bit rate setting. Use this option, and whatever video your converting will be encoded at the highest possible rate - to fit on your disc. You can choose a 74min, or 80min disc, and it will set the appropriate bit rate. You might as well use the automatic setting, as empty disc space is totally wasted.

Oh great i didn't knew that option
can you explain me what yuou means by that :
You might as well use the automatic setting, as empty disc space is totally wasted. -
The comment means that you are better off using the auto setting which will use the correct bitrate to fill the disc as much as possible to avoid ending up with extra space that would be wasted if not used.
On an unrelated note, the preceding statement sure feels like a run-on sentence. :P -
Ok i see but i don't really understand the difference between these options:
Auto select
Auto setting -
Yeah both just one underneath the other
I think it's at the step 4/5 of the wizard -
I think one is for resolution and the other is for bitrate. I think they show up next to which one they apply to. One will lower the resolution if it feels the bitrate is to low for it to look good at that resolution or raise it if you are wasting bitrate on such a low resolution. This is off the top of my head. They are talking about the one next to bitrate.

Ah! I see what you mean now. I didn't see it at first because I didn't select the DVD template. K(c)offee is absolutely correct with his assumption.
-
So i guess you suggest using those options if i want the best quality that can fit on a blank CDR ?
-
As far as the resolution goes, there's only one you can use for SVCD and it's 480x480 for NTSC(480x576 for PAL). Definitely use the auto setting for bitrate though. One more thing, my personal rule of thumb is to not put more than 45 minutes on one SVCD if the movie has a lot of action. For slower paced movies, no more than 55 minutes. That's just me though.

CVD! CVD! CVD! Sorry... but hey, lets you squeeze in a few extra minutes @ roughly same quality considering the lower resolution....
-
Quite true. In fact I recently stopped making SVCD's entirely in favor of CVD for the reason you specified, and also because 352x480 is an acceptable DVD resolution whereas 480x480 is not. I figure I'll save a lot of time should I decide to transfer the files to DVD some day. The only problem is that not all set top DVD players will play non-standard discs such as CVD.

How can i bring back the option
Auto select (beside resolution)
I reinstalled the software and the option is gone ?? -
Did you install a different version? Get the latest version from the homepage.

I tought that I took the latest version, I will check tonight
I don't remember which one i had before ...
So, you think it's not a setting issue but a version issue ?
