No, no, no. Don't. Take the trouble and install the codecs you really need, as you need them. Pretty soon you'll have a system that cand deal with 99.9% of every avi/mpeg you can throw at it, while not carrying around lots of redundant/conflicting codecs.

I think most people will agree that codec packs are not a good idea. The possiblility that they'll create conflicts on your system is just too great. You're much better off using something like G-spot to determine which codecs you need when you're not able to watch a particular movie and installing them individualy. However if you are lazy and don't want to bother with this and you want to take your chances, I'd recommend the K-lite codec pack.

    Sorry have to agree,

Install as and when you need them, and do not install any you do not need.

I have seen a number of threads where the problems people have been having have been corrected by removing a unused codec or two.

Don't take the risk, spend that little extra time and download when you need them.

As teegee420 put, use G-Spot to determine any new one you need when you cant read a file.

As you may know, FFDSHOW does cover a lot of codecs but not all like 3ivx, VP3 and DV AVI. You only need to cross those bridges(or other usupported codecs) should you come to them.

  9. So if you personally format your computer and reinstall it
you would only install this FFDSHOW codec package and then wait the day you have a file that use a missing codec ?

That's what I would suggest to *you*. I only use FFDSHOW so TMPGEnc can decode Xvid files, and I don't use it for playback of any type of file. That's just me though.

What do you mean by that ?

This package seem to have codec for DIVX 3-4-5 and XVID
But i can't read MPG-2 SVCD file. What do you suggest to install to be able to read those file ?

I meant that I don't use FFDSHOW to decode any files when I'm playing them in my media player. As you mentioned, FFDSHOW can handle a number of different encoded files, but I use the individual codecs(Divx,XVID,etc.) instead of relying on FFDSHOW.

For mpeg-2 you can try this mpeg-2 codec, or install Power DVD.

  14. Ouch. K-lite if you insist on a pack. Avoid Nimo codec pack at all costs.
    Pull! Bang! Darn!

  15. With FFDSHOW it pretty much did the job
