  1. I have some kids game CDs. They are physically wearing out so I thought to create a backup of these. The stuff is copyrighted. I tried the following.

    1. I copied the entire CD to the HD, uninstalled the software and tried installing it from my HD, it got installed. Then I double clicked the icon to open, the initial menu was displayed and when I selected "PLAY", it gave an error message and asked me to put the CD in the CD drive.

    2. I made a dickcopy of that CD, somewhere it said the CD was copyright protected but I was able to make the Copy only to find that I didnt work.

    3. I created an image of the CD and tried burning it, but the burnt CD didnt even work.

I understand from the FORUM rules (fair use) that I am entitled to create the backup for my own use.

I used Nero for burning and Alcohol 120 for creating image.

    Please help

  2. Use CloneCD to make a backup of the game. If you want to play the game on your computer without the CD in the drive you need a NO CD patch which are legal. You can get them here: GameCopyWorld

  3. Thx nissmo

Just a dumb question again, is this "NO CD patch" a generic utility which runs for all games or is specific for a game ?

  4. CloneCD has always worked for me when it comes to making backups of Copywrited CDs that I own...However, for my son's PC I chose a different way of doing things. I set his PC up with Virtual Drive which essentialy creates a bunch of Virtual CD ROM drives that appear as drive letters in his directory. I use the program to create image files on his hard drive of each of his game CDs. I choose to create 10 virtual drives (but I believe that you can create up to 23). That way he can keep as many as 10 CD images loaded in their own drive letter giving him instant access to each game. When he wants to play a game that isn't loaded he simply "ejects" the image and "inserts" a different one and he is ready to play. The play response time is quicker also because the response time of his hard drive is less than from his "real" CD drive
No, I'm from Iowa. I only work in outer space.

Yes it is. Go to the site and search your game.
