  1. Hi All

I have a problem copying VCD's using Toast.

    Here is my problem:-

I have a VCD CD that plays fine no problems, I have tried to copy this disk using Toast 5.2.3 by doing a straight disk copy or from disk image, neither work. They get top the same point during the play and then I get a Disk Block, Sector error. I think this is where it switched from one .DAT file to the next.

Here is what is on the original disk:-

    There are five folders:-

    EXT
    CDI
    MPEGAV
    SEGMENT
    VCD

In the MPEGAV folder is two files - AVSEQ01.DAT and AVSEQ02.DAT

When do a disk Image copy the EXT folder does not get copied, if I try to copy data copy all the folders etc from the original VCD I get a file cannot be found -36 Error message. I also get this message if I try to drag and drop the two .DAT files from the disk.

I thought a VCD could just be copied as can any other CDR CD DVD etc, what am I missing here?

Do I need some other burning software to copy VCD's?

Can anybody help with this? As I really want to copy these disks.

how exactly are you doing this with toast?
    For me, insert vcd disk
    open toast
    go to COPY
go to FILE then SAVE AS DISK IMAGE
    and off it goes

if it errors then perhaps you should consider there is a problem with the disk?

Ive had vcd's of some pretty shady media that was free and cheap and have this sort of error.

    best of luck

  3. Hi

    Thanks for the reply

Yup, that is exactly how I do it, I can do a disk image copy no problem, but the resulting copy does not work.

The copy I get plays through just fine until I beleive it gets to a point where it switches from one .DAT file to the next then it just errors out.

I had the same trouble with a couple VCDs. The error message I got was 'Data in AVSEQ01.DAT could not be read or written'. There is something apparently wrong with one of the .DAT files. On one of the VCD disc the only program that would even play it was MacVCD X 4.20. The only way I could copy it was using MacVCD X with the 'Save As Self-Contained Movie' selection. The disc was clean and I tried three different drives, just something wrong with the .DAT file. Kinda strange you have two .DAT files, all my VCDs only have one. Good Luck.

  6. Hi All

I would like to say thank you to those that replied to my problem.

Guess what, I have now copied that stubborn VCD and the copy works

So I would like to thank YKZ for his suggestion of trying a burning program called Firestarter.

Thanks YKZ I am a very happy person tonight.

i should have read your post closer

Toast 5.2.3 doesnt handle VCD/SVCD from images at all

    future refrence for you
    either get Toast 6
or use MMB / FirestarterFX for all your VCD/SVCD burning needs

toast 5 has no problem making an image for you to extract out the mpeg and author a new bin/cue set, but it cant burn the resulting .bin/.cue properly

likewise, to help you save time if you do this alot
    1. save a .cue file on your HD.
    2. backup the VCD to .toast
    3. rename that backup to .bin
    4. make the .cue files name exactly the name of the .bin [but ending in .cue obviously]
    5. burn

this saves you lots of time since you dont need to rip the mpeg and reauthor it to .bin/cue
