  1. Hi,

I recently purchased a Toshiba 4900 player, and have managed to hack into it and it is now region free. I'm just wondering since I have a NTSC tv, and in the DVD player booklet its laser type is listed as NTSC. Does this mean I cannot play a PAL disc on this player. Somone on the hack listings said it did PAL conversion, but didn't mention whether or not they had a PAL or multisystem tv. Basically, I just want to verify that this player will support PAL discs before I spend $20 to $30 on a region 2 DVD. If anybody can help, please post. Thanks!

Just start exploring the menu on that DVD player. Look for an "output setting" or something. That is the only way to verify that it actually CONVERTS one format to the other.

I've seen some website that sell pre-hacked TOSHIBA DVD players that claim that not only are they REGION FREE but that they can also convert PAL to NTSC but the models I have seen in the past don't match up with the model you have but if it is a new model ... well I haven't been looking lately.

I didn't know one could hack into a TOSHIBA DVD player on their own. My understanding was that it needed a hardware hack but hey things change from model to model so ...

If you hacked it and made it REGION FREE and you have "heard" that your specific model does PAL to NTSC then it just might.

You probably won't know for sure until you try it. Would hurt you to buy just one PAL DVD to test. If it doesn't work you can always convert it to NTSC on the computer and burn yourself a NTSC DVD-R or DVD+R etc.

All Toshibas I've seen only play PAL VCD, not PAL DVD.

  5. I've ordered a Region 2 PAL disc, so if this plays does that mean there is a built in converter or is it possible for a PAL disc to convert itself to NTSC. Thanks

Like I said I have seen some modified TOSHIBA DVD players that can do PAL to NTSC conversion but my understanding was that these were somehow modified with a hardware chip solution.

So there is little way of knowing if your unit can do it until you try. Either it will work or it won't. If it doesn't work you will probably get some sort of scrambled most likely b/w image that will roll horizontally across the screen.

  7. The Toshiba SD 4900 will play a Pal DVD and convert it to NTSC with a simple hack available on the left. Remote codes below:

    Menu
    1
    clear

    Marker
    clear

  8. Oops, its:

    Menu
    1
    Play

and your DVD from other regions will play.

  9. Plays PAL dvds perfectly right out of the box.
The remote hack worked, and so did the cd to make it permantly region free. Does perfect anamorphic PAL conversion as well (old players couldn' do both things at once).
I think almost all dvd players can do PAL conversion. They're just set to whatever tv type of the country they're being sold in.
