This is one of the last bits of research I need to do before finally
tackling this project. I've got (access to) a PC with a firewire port.
It's decently fast, so no worries there. Using WinXP.

What software should I use? Main (only?) concern is dropped frames.
If possible, I'd like to use something that can detect when it has had
to drop a frame, and inform me immediately, so I can start over, or
do whatever is appropriate. If this is simply impossible, then something
that can analyze the DV file and detect dropped frames that way is a
    must.

    Thanks in advance!

Thanks! Before I make that little program my capture software of choice, may I ask what makes it a better choice than other software, like WinDV?

I started using Powervcr after I got 29gig of AVI files from a 2h. 15m. movie. I now transfer to the HDD in MPEG 2 and I'm happy with the quality. (others may not be). There again, I'm not looking for perfection.
