Hi
I am interested in 2 products, but not sure which one I should get for my purpose, anyway these are some of the things I will want to do.
I want to backup my VHS tapes onto DVD
Also would it be possible for me to use the Canopus ADVC 100 without a computer
EG; say for instance I have a standalone DVD recorder like the Philips DVDR-890 which has firewire input and I connect my VHS player to the Canopus ADVC 100 and then from the Canopus DV out to the Philips firewire to record directly to DVD, does anyone know if this would work
The 2 products I am deciding over are the Canopus (obviously) and the Vidac Vmagic TvPlus, I must admit I like the way this Vmagic can deal directly with Vob files.
Would appreciate your help very much please
Thankyou
Maff

I you are doing VHS to DVD I would go with the ADVC-100. I own one and I transfer VHS tapes to the computer without any problems. I think you would be able to transfer directly to your DVDR-890 with the ADVC. It essentially acts as a DV video recorder (at least that what my computer views it as.) So if the DVDR-890 allows firewire input from DV camcorders then I believe it would work. The ADVC can even have its macrovision shut off if the need be. The ADVC-100 is a nice, reliable product that I (and many other people) have never had a problem with.

Thanks -
I believe that you will be able to shut off the macrovision. Sift through these posts to find out how to turn the macrovision off (I can't remember how to off hand

the Canopus ADVC 100 out to the Philips firewire in does NOT work
I have the ADVC 100 and the philips DVDR 72 (eg 75) and the firewire does not work, but I use the analog and S-video out do work if you want to convert your VHS library to DVD. Quality is near original but appears a little darker. To turn off macovision on the ADVC 100, hold down the Digital/Analog button on the front until the color bars go away. Macrovision is then disabled until the unit is powered off.
