  2. Try TMPGEnc DVD Author. It'll convert the DVD to MPEG-2 files that you can then use to create a new DVD. Not sure if it'll be able to read *after* the bad spot tho.

    Try something that works.

Use DVDDecryptor, tell it to ignore errors after 2 re-tries. Clean the DVD with the toothpaste method (tepid water, toothpaste, and your finger, in motion around the DVD, not edge-center, rinse and pat dry). Rip the disk. It can take awhile to get through the rrors. Hopefully you will just have a hard jump at the errors, and the remaining 19% should be fine.

I have salvaged several kids movies this way, with only a few hiccups in spots for a badly damaged DVD.

I have salvaged DVD's using Carnuba Wax. (Do not use liquid wax of any kind!!!) I use an old pioneer 2x DVD when doing this, just in case but i'v ben doing it for 2 years with no problems.
I personally use Turtle Wax Carnuba Paste.
and apply a very thin film to the bad spots
then buff these areas out I use a dremal on low speed with a polising bit
also when buffing by hand heavy felt seems to work.
