Hey I've been trying to read everything on this site as fast as possible and I found alot of great information! I think I have come down to choosing the Pioneer DVR-A06/106D. I've read everywhere that this is a great choice. But can someone post a link of where to buy it for the best price? And I mean the exact link, because I keep checking Newegg and stuff and I see there are a bunch of variations and I dont want to buy the wrong one! Is this a good DVD burner to get? Has it been outdated? Thanks!

Hi there,
I have had this drive since August (Maybe Sep) of 03 and so far have been very pleased with it. I haven't even upgraded the firmware yet (still running the original 1.05 FW that came with it) and I have yet to come across any media that will not burn. My drive is the 106D-BK the BK designates the black face plate as opposed to the white face plate (Matches the Dell case better
I wouldn't say that this drive is outdated yet, but Pioneer does have the A07/107 available. From my understanding, it should be similar to the 06/106 with the exception of it is an 8X drive as opposed to the 106's 4X speed.
Now on to the newegg question. I just looked at their web page and see that they list 4 types of Pioneer drives. Two are the 106s and the other two are the 107s. The big difference is that the ones that end with the BK designation are the black faced drives.
Unfortunately, as of 26 Feb Newegg has the white 106D listed as out of stock. Anyway here is the link to the four pioneer drives:

As I said above, I am very happy with this drive and would highly recommend it to anybody. It has burned everything (+ and - media) that I have given it and has burned them well. Lately I have been using Ritek G04's almost exclusively (with the occasional odd media that friends let me test) with no problems. Since I purchased this drive, I have had only one coaster, but that was due to the AV software starting it's weekly scan. (Normally wouldn't be writing a DVD at 4AM, but with a sick two year old sometimes the hours get a little odd) So that coaster wasn't the drive's fault but user issues.
I don't think you would go wrong with this drive.

I have the 106 and no problems. Original firmware,no problems. The difference in the drives are; OEM and Pioneer factory. The OEM may or may not come with software. (Usually lame software) The sellers put varied software with the drive to improve sales. Best price is usually no software, bare drive. There are earlier and later versions of the drive, later is probably better. If you buy from one of the larger retailers, you should get a later version, but no guarantee. Bottom line, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't.
