  1. my nec nd1300a burner will only burn in PIO mode (i had a 1100a, and it had the same problem). my system won't even recognize it properly if it's set to DMA. in the device manager, it's listed correctly but has one of those yellow circles with an exclamation next to it. in explorer it's listed as a cd drive with an exclamation there as well. explorer just throws an error at me if i click on it. this is all fine in PIO.

i have it set as master on my secondary IDE channel (dvd-rom as slave, same channel). i uninstalled the secondary IDE channel, but that didn't work (i tried primary just to see what would happen, as well. not simultanesouly, though). i uninstalled the SIS IDE controller, but it got reinstalled instead of the generic IDE controller. I messed with the burning service in system admin tools, but that didn't work either. i tried about everything i've seen about these burners on this forum, but can't get it to work. i didn't see anybody with errors and recognition problems i have though. please help.

i've got all my sys info listed in my profile if that helps.

Remove the DVDROM. Delete your controller in computer manager and re-boot. It should come back as UDMA mode. The key is you have to delete the controller device then reboot to get it to jum from PIO to UDMA. Removing the DVDROM is a safeguard incase it's old and slow and PIO mode only.

  3. real quick clarification. the dvd-rom is in DMA and runs fine. specifically, it's set to DMA if available and is said to be running in Ultra DMA 2. when i set the burner to DMA if available, it says Ultra DMA 2 as well.

as far as uninstalling the controller from computer management, will that work any differently because i would still be uninstalling from device manager, but just inside computer management. also, should i set the burner back to DMA before uninstalling, or would that even matter since it will be reinstalled?

i'm not at my computer right now, so i'm just asking as many questions as i can for when i go home later just so i'll be clear on what to do.

  4. unplugging the ole dvd-rom worked. thanks. my burner is now recognized and functions properly in DMA mode.

however, i was hoping that would solve my other problem, so i didn't post it. it didn't so i have another question. i use nero easy cd creator 5 and when i burn a cd using 'track at once' or burn an image onto a dvd-r i get a buffer underrun error every time. is it just the software and i should try something else?
