I just seen the preveiw for Rings when I went to see Joy Ride....at first I thought..."stupid"...but once they started showing the creatures and stuff coming after them....expecially that part where the guy hides under a large tree trunk and you see a cloaked creature look over there and I saw the skeleton like hand...I thought "COOOOOOOOL".....looks interesting.

  5. But why would they do this? Shouldn't they introduce The Hobbit first? Or perhaps if this series of movies is popular enough, they'll release the Hobbit afterwards like how Star Wars released Episode 1 afterwards.

  6. It was always my opinion after reading the Hobbit, then the 3 other books, that the Hobbit was written more for younger children.

The first movie will be almost 3 hours, so they'll most likely explain at least where the ring came from and who Bilbo is and what role Gandalf played in the previous story.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy can exist on it's own without necessarily needing the Hobbit. The only long term character from the Hobbit is Gandalf.

If the trilogy follows the book without too many deviations or imissions then this should prove to be a great series. The production companies must haev alot of faith in these movies doing really well for them to plan to release then within two years of each other.

  10. Here's what I think:

There are two major audiences that are going to this movie; those of us who've seen and read the relevent books/movies/etc and those who just want to see a good movie.

Three in the 5 book series were done in animation (Lord of the Rings had horrible rotoscope crap in it) but the makers of the new movies wanted three movies. I guess it just makes sense not to redo all three of the ones already done. All that would ensue would be debate on already hashed issues regarding the three books/movies/animations. Instead, we're gonna get more to talk about with 2, undone, of the 5 books! AND a comparison re: Return of the King! Plus, we get to innundate people with the historic hobbit trail(s) that lead up to Fellowship of the ring!

    Movies:
The Fellowship of the Ring release: December 19, 2001.
The Two Towers release: December 14, 2002
Return of the King release: December 14, 2003.

    Books:
Title: The Hobbit | Published: 1937
Title: The Lord of the Rings | Published: 1954-55
Title: The Fellowship of the Ring | Published: 1987
Title: The Two Towers | Published: 1987
Title: The Return of the King | Published: 1991

  12. Well I have cut my teeth on SVCD using the LOTR movie teasers & trailers. I now have a nice SVCD with menus with all 4 teasers/trailers, a TV spot someone posted & a short on Hobbiton (although it was in RM and TINRA material is hard to audio sync.

The SVCD trailers are generally good quality & better than VCDs of the same material.

    Bring it on!

I disagree that it's doomed to fail artistically. Doomed to please everyone who's truely a Tolkien fan, yes. We all have our own mental version of what would be best (I do anyway) ... But I think, and hope, that they are doing things in a quality way without cutting corners, and that's the way to create such an epic.

I don't think it'll fail. The actors are top notch, so is the production. Two lead prod designers are responsible for some decent Tolkien bestiary type books and what the creatures look like. Besides, devoting three full movies to the book is a good sign. 18 months of shooting, 18 months of post production=serious investment that they surely couldn't affored to cockup.

To rasch, how do you get 5 books - are they supposed to make LOTR twice? The second book in your list is the complete book in one printing.

The books were split into three because publishers figured it'd be easier for people to buy if the book was split into three, and there may have been some issue with the war going on in England at the time that influenced the economics. I vaguely recall something along those lines when I read Tolkien's biography (a good read for you fans out there).

wonder if it's going to have alternate endings....

    tolkien's ending to TLOTR's isn't very hollywood

    (unless sean penn's directing...)

I got the book and thier orig. published dates from a Tolkien site. I suppose I wasn't very clear in my posting ... I do that sometimes.

Yes, The LOTR book was split into three, hence LOTR trillogy. I was referencing the three animated shows already made; The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and Return of the King.

I was mearly drawing comparison between the three animated features already made and the three movies comming out and using the books as a reference.

The confusing bit is the fact that they made an animated movie from the entire LOTR book.

    they never did two towers.

  22. The Two Towers was actually covered (albeit poorly) in Bakshi's version. As for the new production, hats off to peter Jackson for allowing so much fan input. From what I've read, he seems to have listened to at least some of the concerns of the die-hards. As for me, good or bad, my life has been leading up to the release of this film. Even if it's bad, I think it will break box office records the first two weeks. Evidence: this topic has little (if anything) to to do with VCD. But watch it become the biggest thread. Like kitty, I also have used the LOTR trailers as VCD practice material!
