Is it really worth it? You read about people that go out and buy everything that is on the shelf when (insert store) has a sale on DVDs. Then you get the tons of people requesting the media code. I just wonder if it's really worth it anymore? I mean there seems to be a sale every week or so at (insert store). The prices keep getting lower and lower too. So why bother buying everything off the shelves, when there will be a new sale in a few weeks. I understand that some people burn DVDs for their work, but why would a home user need to buy this many?

I don't know. Unless you think like I do and wonder if the price will come down any time soon. I doubt that the price of DVDRs get cheap super fast making the purchase of lots of DVDs on sale impractical.
I could be wrong though. -
I don't buy whatever is one sale. I have a few brands that I like and trust. They are not always on sale, but when they are I buy up as much as I can afford. To me it's worht getting what I want at the quality I want.

Not worth it to me. I'm bemused when someone states he buys hundreds at a time. What are you guys, packrats?
Ninety-nine percent of everything published is pure crapola. Anything that can be termed "classic" belongs to a very exclusive club. (Classic meaning it has enduring value.)
Same applies to movies, if not moreso. But hey, the fun is in the doing, so have at it! Bet a lot of those flicks you backup get watched very seldom. :PPull! Bang! Darn! -
I don't just make pretty websites, I have a lot of video business too these days, so yes, I'll buy up a local sale when media is trusted. I just bought out all the area MXL discs from Walgreens sales (110 discs). And then all the SONY clearance discs from one Walmart store (90 discs). Packrat? No, just prepared, and at a decent price. I only buy a few brands (nix, MEDIX IDs) for my media stock.
Yes, it is worth it. For now. Plus you never know when somebody wants to switch to CMC to cut corporate corners.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Packrats?
I now have RITEK, RICOH, & MXL discs. I buy them because it's cheap when they're on sale. I wanted to try different brands of media that Plextor recommends. Making back ups of american & asian movies and tv series takes up a lot of dvd discs.

Well I preferr to buy mail order, so it is worth it to me to buy alot at once since I am paying shipping. Otherwise I don't stock up that much, rural area, no decent stores. Doesn't cost much more to shipp 100 DVDs than 25 DVDs.
As for backups, yep I make those too. And yes we watch the fire out of them. Bruce Almighty and Scooby Doo ect...
Value of a back up? Well I was in the office the other day when we heard a loud thwap sound. Sounded like slapping a leather belt real hard on a table top. Geuss what we found a few minutes latter, co-workers comercail software cd litterly exploded in his cd drive!! I had to take the driv e apart to get all the pieces out and clean it. Surprisingly it still works good as new, reads and write fine, but of course that disk is a total loss!
Luckily he had a backup, expensive software!
Same could happen to the DVDs, also have had trays close on disks and trash them too. I back up everything I care about keeping! Cd's, Tapes, DVD, ect...
Of course lots of us create original DVDs also, not just all ripping and burning. Then there are those in business converting home movies, doing weddings, etc...
SO lots of us do use tons of disks for many reasons and will grab up a 100 or more at a time on sale.
I am also going to start selling them locally. I get a better price on several hundred disks and cases at once, Might as well sell the good stuff at the office to those only needing a couple disks here and there. They get better disks and prices than at wall-mart when they buy from me
I only use Riteks now, they are great quality and cheap enough for me. -
Everyone have their own idea
. Some time I get mad with people becasue they buy alot and they did not leave some for me to buy
. But if you come to the store and see the good deal and great media then you will buy as much as you can otherwise when you go home, then after you burn 10 or more than you will say... Dammm..I should buy more ... 8) I will not have the second chance to buy
.
Will you buy 2 set and leave 2 set for someone ??? Get real you will buy all, but you can share with your friend right. I will ....
If you buy alot and seldom to use then you should not do that, someone may need it.
But if you need it a lot then buy it. The other can do the rain check, and can go to another store to do the price match. Trust me you can do it in USA. So dont worry for the other, they can have it if they want to 8)
This is what I think, please dont get MAD, life will have no end, to me, if you lose a penny but you can gain a dollars later , why get mad ... always have a better deal for someone who wait... the price is always go down... but if you can not wait then buy all when you can.
Cheers, 8) -
I once asked myself that very question. When you find media that you like and is not always on sale then the answer is yes.
With today's Staples TDK sale, I went to four stores in my are and purchased a total of 40 ten packs.
Three ten packs are gone burning discs for friends.
Last month I burned two hundred discs.
Yes prices are coming down but not at such a pace that I will have overpurchased in buying quality media at eighty cents a disc [plus local tax] -

What was he doing, spinning a cracked or warped disk in the drive at 80x speed?

I buy a 50 bulk pack about once a month through mail order. The brand works great in my DVD burner and I'm afraid I will run out and never find another compatible disc for the price.

Actually, I'm thinking of the people that come here totally ignorant, asking about movie downloads, etc. Next month they're buying DVDRs by the hundred. As long as they keep what they're doing strictly to themselves, not my business.
Yeah, it's apparent there are many members here whose interest is professional. That's what makes this site incomparably the best. Hobbyists like me couldn't learn as much anywhere else. 8)Pull! Bang! Darn! -
If people see a good deal they should take advantage of it imo. Anyways, ive seen some stores have restrictions on sale items (ie max no per customer)

:edit: For the heck of it, I just checked to see if I could get the same deal or better from the same store I bought my media from 1 month ago. Yep, same media for 1 cent less than a month ago.. -
Yes, when you save a lot of money buying 100 instead of ten.
Staples though has +r & -r media 4x for $10/10 so so need to buy 100... -

Why do i buy 100 at a time because i can save money on shipping and get a better price. Also i can sell some on to friends who are too lazy to go and source their own stock...Not bothered by small problems...
Spend a night alone with a mosquito -
Well.. I like buying in the 100's just because I have two roomates and 2 other good freinds that have DVD Writers. It seems we are always sharing prices of DVD's. Just recently bought a 100pack of Memorex printable tops for 98$. About 14$ for shipping 2 day and split that price down the middle with 1 of my roomates. I got 50 printable tops for a little over 50$. The quality of the prints are awesome..and no coasters yet. It is very hard to find sale prices for white printable tops so far. And shipping would be another reason.
But everytime I buy these things..I think about the fact that Media prices could take a nose dive in a month. But that is exactly what I went through with CD-R MEdia when they first started getting popular. -
LOL...thats a first What was he doing, spinning a cracked or warped disk in the drive at 80x speed?
I was suprised the drive even worked after that. I did have to take it apart and wipe out the disk dust, slivers, and sprinkles with a rag as well as move a large piece so the tray would open.
Gee, maybe the Riaa is right, no need to make backups
Although I think that was a software disk, not audio, but a disk is a disk.
That's why I back up all my $10 -$20 movies soon as I open the package normally. And also why I buy lots of disks at one time. -

Everything else is in smaller quantities. I don't trust Manufacturer A to use Formula B long enough to develop a consistent reputation, so I limit my bulk purchases to Taiyo discs only.
Two or three trips to Wal-Mart per week keeps my Memorex +RW and +R inventory in good shape. -
I buy whatever is on sale at the time that I need them. For instance, the local tech store had Maxell 4X on sale for a little over a buck a piece (including case). So I grabbed twenty. These will last me for quite some time considering I only use about 2/3 ish a week.
And yeah, something is always on sale, so I just buy that. I don't care if it's CMC or whatever, everything has worked for me.
But hey, buy in bulk, save ya a penny or two... so what? Go for it. -
When I need 'em, I take a tip from other members here. There's always someone to report what's on special and what's the lowdown on manufacturer code. With a bit of patience, you can hold out for quality blanks (Ricoh/Ritek/TDK/MCC/MXL) at less than $1 apiece. I have 20 or so on hand, that'll probably last me for months. For those who use a lot more, well obviously buying online is the way to go.
