Sorry I can't recommend a Sony (not familiar with the current line) but I can tell you that the silver Pioneers (250/280/350) will play everything I've thrown at them. Generally they are less than $90 at WalMart.

    They are nice looking also.

well when i get home, im gonna play around some more before I just go out and buy a new dvd player....

but if it leads to that.... this pioneer does seem to be pretty nice for the money.... it has a few things my Toshiba doesnt have.... like prgressive scan... what exactly is that? does it mean anything since I dont have a HD TV? i just have a Sony Wega with component cables....

and it also says it plays mp3 and dvdr and dvdrw

  6. I bought that same player for my mother and it will play DVD-R or DVD+R. Here is how I make backups for my mothers player.

1: I rip the original DVd using SmartRipper into a VIDEO_TS folder.
2: If the original DVD is a DVD5 or single layer DVD then I just burn the VIDEO_TS folder to DVD-R using RecordNow Max burning software.
3: If the original DVD is a DVD9 or dual layer then I use DVD2one or DVDshrink to re-encode the ripped VIDEO_TS folder to another folder into a VIDEO_TS folder then use RecordNow Max to burn that folder.

SmartRipper and DVDshrink aree free, look in the tools section of this site.

    Scott015,

If you insist on a silver DVD player, you can try a Norcent DP300. I have one and it plays everything I threw at it (DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW - I have a Sony DRU500A dual-format burner). I also will play JPEGs, MP3 and even DVD-MP3 (MP3s burned onto a data DVD, over 1000 songs)

Also search through the DVD hacks section of this site and it'll tell you what to look for to get one that is region and macrovision hackable if that of any interest.

It does not have a progressive output, but you would need a TV that can take advantage of this.

well that seems pretty close to what I am doing except...

i didnt use any smart ripper... i just went from dvdshrink, then erased, compressed what I needed, then saved all the files to my HD

then, used Nero and burned to the video_ts folder on my dvd-r disk...

so maybe Im having probs with Nero....??

Hmm you really need to rip the DVD first to remove any copy protection and region information.

  10. A bump for this topic with a question:

The info at this site on the SD-1600 says it will support DVD-R and I concur as mine does perfectly.

The info further says that DVD+R is NOT supported and again I have found that to be the case, at least with my own limited experience (burned a DVD+R using DVD Shrink/Nero that gave a disc error when loaded in the SD-1600).

However, it seems that some have had success playing DVD+R on their SD-1600.

If so, could they comment on what needs to be done during the recording process to create a DVD+R that the SD-1600 is happy with?

I've got the Tosbiba SD-2700 and I've learned that there are two things which are VERY important if you want perfect playback on a Tosbiba: burn on high quality media (like Ritek) and burn at low speeds (1x or 2x). Do this, and you'll have perfect playback. Use el cheapo discs and you'll regreat it.

  12. I had one which I gave to my mother. The player will play DVD-R media. Are you putting all the DVD compatible files into a 'VIDEO_TS" folder then burning that folder? If not then that's your problem.

  13. I just wanted to add that while so far I have only tried 1 DVD-R in my Toshiba SD1600 (just got my burner last weekend), it did play fine. However, I was not ripping a movie. I converted to AVI files to .M2V and burned them (audio as AC3). I authored using TMPGENC DVD Author and then used Nero 6.3.0.3 to burn. The resulting disc played fine on my player. I burned at 4x on a TDK branded Ritek G04 disc.

I am considering buying a new player to add +R and MP3 capability.

  14. Yes, I know that the SD-1600 will play DVD-R.

But I have heard conflicting reports on whether it can also play DVD+R.

My own experience and the player database here says NO.

If anyone has successfully played movies burned to a DVD+R disk on a SD-1600, I would be interested in the burning process or Nero parameters used.

Some time in the future, I will probably get a more advanced player like the SD-4900 that apparently does play almost any DVD recordable format.

    Thanks again.

  15. Just FYI, I purchased the SD4900 last night and quickly ripped a movie to DVD+R. Played fine on the SD4900. Since it was about 2a.m., I went to bed without trying it on the SD1600. I will do that tonight, but based on previous comments (ie., 95% say DVD+R won't play, 5% say it will) it was never a big deal for me to try. Especially since I wanted to buy a new player anyway for VCD, SVCD and MP3 compatibility.
