Hello all.
Just wondering what all you guys opinions are on the bitrate of original dvds.
The opinion here is dvd2one does a better job with high bitrate discs and dvdshrink does the business with low bitrate.
I just checked the bitrate with bitrate viewer on blade r1 and american psycho r1 both originals. Blades peak was 9562 and average was 5854 whereas american psycho was peak 7919 and average was 4326.
What values constitute high bitrate and low bitrate??
Just wondered your views on this??
Cheers guys.

As a rule of thumb, 4800kbps can be considered average bitrate. 8000kbps can be safely considered high and anything higher than that can be considered dangerous (can lead to skips and picture freeze).
An average bitrate of 6000kbps for a movie on a DVD9 can also be considered average, as once the producer decides they need two layers there is no point in reducing it.
Some movies have few wild action scenes. Some others have more of these. Movies like Armagedon need a lot of bitrate to properly encode.
The ~4500kbps you mention is rather lowish for a DVD9. Haven't really watched the movie, so can't tell if it needs the bitrate or not.
Also, hard letterboxed movies need a lower bitrate, as part of the frame is constantly black. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
I consider High Bitrate as the highest it can be while still being able to conform to DVD standards. Low Bitrate is when the end product pretty much looks like a mosaic
